Why would a 1984 buick regal with a 3.8 v6 with an auto transmission have something as big as a 10 bolt posi rear end? I am very confused. I am considering it for a better gas mileage car and the body is in decent shape. I have a feeling with that rear end the gears must me really high for a quick pickup and the smaller engine would be countered to my low end rear gear and v8 in my el camino any help on the matter would be great. I am going to have to do some more commuting soon and the v8 is slowly hitting my wallet more and more with age.

They don't say it is. For the price they are asking. They either don't know or something is wrong with it, if it is a t type. Is that the only explanation that there is for it? Isn't a 10 bolt even big for a t type stock rear end? Just wondering may go look at it for kicks and see what it looks like.

Of course, it is a 7.5" 10 bolt rear. Just run of the mill junk like was in my elky V6 when I bought it. http://www.turbobuicks.com/forums/images/smilies/yup.gif

The G80 posi was a option on all car`s. The rear gears or most likely 2.41`s.

So it is normal ok they had it in big letters like it was a rare option or something. Does anybody know how the gas mileage stacks up on these compared to my 3speed v8 elky? I don't want to invest in something that wont help that much in the long run.

I doubt you'll see much difference except in slowness. http://www.turbobuicks.com/forums/images/smilies/yup.gif

If its not an t type or grand.. its not a posi... And it has a 231 v6... Theres only one way to find out jack up the rear end and spin the wheel. If they both turn the same direction then its a posi if one wheel spins one way and the other spins the other way then its not....:texas:

Apparently, the fact that the car has the same 10 bolt as every other non-performance Regal is somehow significant to them -- or they think by accentuating this "option" in their ad, it might take someone in.

I had a new '84 Regal Limited. A really nice car. Of course the 3.8, and carburated also. wasn't much for power. 23 miles per gallon though. My wife drove it for work.
We had it for three years. Never paid any attention to the rear end size...

If its the turbo 3.8, posi would make sense. Those turbo v6's buick churned out really spun the tires.
Easy way to tell if its a GN or T-type, most were ordered in Black ;)
If its any other color, good chance someone doesnt know what their selling

The Chevrolet Division really hated the Buick Grand National Regal :smileyb: And some of the Corvette guys did too.:smileyb:. Nothing like a car that gets over 20 MPG and kicks ass too:smileyb:

The turbo engine in '84 had a 2.93 gear. Most of the other V6 cars had a 2.41 rear, same as most 80's Caminos. When I had to drive a Regal as a company car (sales mgr. for a Buick-GMC dealer) in the early 80's, I'd always order the optional 3.08. The fuel economy of the standard V6 was at the expense of decent acceleration. There were a bunch of 10-bolt rears, ranging from the lowly 7.5 ring gear in the late 70's thru the 90's, used in the G-body, Camaro & S10 to the 8.5 ring gear in the 60's thru 70's A-body cars as well as the GN and 442 of the 80's.
