My starter wires go straight up and wrap around the dipstick tube.
The problem is they get burned on the headers sometimes.
What is the way the factory routed them? I kinda think they should go back and up against the firewall.

Thanks, Jay

They were held back against the transmission with a clip. One of the trans bolts held the clip. The headers are the problem. One thought to protect the wires. Have no idea how well it works. Sold through a few places. Here's one for reference. http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/aero6.htm

Should have been run through a little tube a few inches long attached to the bell housing as John stated. The headers do present a problem. I used to wrap the wires with asbestos tape, but the sleeves on the link John send look like they would work ot better.

If you do go with some type of protective sleeve, remember that the 72 has a large eyelet on the engine harness wire. Chevy ran the engine harness in 72 different than the earlier years. There is a wire coming down and going to the solenoid B+ terminal. The sleeving needs to be large enough inside to push this terminal through. Don't buy something too small in diameter.
Good luck whatever route you go.
