I am thinking of buying a 1970 El Camino from out of state, what are the Texas laws for classic car tags, inspections, registrations and such? Are tags cheaper if you register as a classic? Thanks

I have year of manufacture (72 in my case) plates and they actually cost me $15.00 more per year than regular plates. The advantage to these plates is that the state does NOT limit yoiur driving.

You could register the car as an antique but then the state limits your driving significantly. As I recall its more or less ONLY to or from shows or in parades. Also as I recall, the plates & inspection are good for several years, so you save there.

I went to the local State Title Office and got some good information. The people at the County Court House had the same info, but depending on who I talked to they were not aware of all the possibilities.

In either case you still need insurance. If you go with classic auto insurance you do save as compared to the usual (state farm, allstate, etc) companys, but again your driving will be limited.

antique plates means no vehicle inspection at all, including safety inspection. Even safety inspections on older vehicles 25 years or older require that air pumps and convertors be in place even if not functioning. That means no true dual exhausts on GMs after about 1975 or so.
