Just got back from the local u pull it. Found my self a rear sway bar out of a 87 cutlass, that should work right? Got it for 8 bucks so what the hell. There were 5 el camino's out there. 1 3rd gen, 2 4th gens, and 2 fith gens. Not to much good stuff on them though. But if anyone wants me to look for anything let me know, i might head back out there tomorrow.

Which yard did you go to? Was it one of the ones in Holly Hill, or the one on 92 W of I 95 (I guess it's still there....haven't been to it in years)?

It's hard to find Elkys in junk yards around here.

It was the one on 92. And yeah tommy, i never see them either usually. This is the first time i have ever seen one there, and there happened to be 5 at the same time.

Now I have a problem. I bought the sway bar with the bolts and the bracket that was in the control arms i think?( I reall don't know a damn thing about suspension). Well I bolted up the sway bar in the same location as i got it in the other car, and everything fit real well. So ofcourse i had to go cruising to see if I can feel a difference, which i can for sure. Well, twice on left turns I heard a strange clunk noise, and when I was easing over a curb i heard the same noise. Sounded like something banging, any idea what it could be? Could it be a clearence issue? my car sits real low, and maybe the sway bar is banging something? I have some Wagon springs coming in soon, so maybe that could fix it. But i seriously doubt thats what it is, any ideas? Like maybe i'm missing some peice? I looked on my friends camaro and the sway bar has bushings holding it to the rear axle, should mine have that also? because if so, where would i find that? and will it damage anything leaving it as is.

Sorry for the run on post, i type as i think, lol.

Have a TRUSTED friend slowly drive the truck over a curb while you peer underneath to see if you can identify where the noise is coming from. Be careful that the TRUSTED friend does not run you over! If successful, you may get an idea of what the problem happens to be. It's free and certainly worth the effort.

that sounds like a good idea. I'll have to do that, but i'm sure i'll need the bushing's anyways.

Steve:

You offered to look for parts for us when you got back to the junk yard, so:

I have a fourth generation 77. It's 'near' show quality, but the wheel well trim on the front right wheel opening is dinged. The replacement needs to be from a Classic. It's much smaller than the SS.

I need the inside door handle on the drivers side. I need the windshield washer bottle and bracket for a 77, and the washer jets that squirt the windshield.

I have a brother-in-law in Ormond Beach. If you can find these, he'll take them and pay you.

But, let me know first, I will need to inform him.

I will probably be moving to the Daytona area in the next year. Let's keep in touch.

Best regards,

Elky77

I'm going back out there tomorrow, if i find it should i buy it? Its rare to find el caminos at the yards here, so i don't know how long the stuff will last. Just tell me whether to buy or not tonight. But to tell you the truth, probably won't be anything you need, they looked pretty rough, but if you say buy, and i feel its in good enough condition i'll get it, sure it will all be real real cheap.

Last summer my local junkyard had about 20 El Caminos or so. 5 gen 5's, 6 gen 4's, 6 gen 3's, 3 gen 2's, but no gen 1's. Sadly the yard underwent new management last winter and most of these cars have now been crushed.

You can see them all here: http://www.insanitation.com/elcoyard

Here's my favorite, It was sunk down into the ground a foot or so, and the hood area had a mound of dirt in it covered with moss.. I think this thing musta been crashed when it was fairly new, and has been there since. The yard's really old, from the 50's, so it's probable.

Still haven't heard back on the sway bar. Maybe his TRUSTED friend ran him over?

lol. I think the left side was a little loose, So i tightened it a bit, haven't heard the noise yet, but didn't get to drive it much. Now I have a front sway bar to worry about putting in, a 34mm one, that should be huge improvement over stock, can't wait. Also got other f41 stuff. Got the fender to radiator support, and the one that goes under the sway bar in the front. Gonna put them all in when i do the front sway bar, which i think i'm gonna wait a bit to do, because i need new front springs also.

When you do replace your springs, if you do, could I have your passenger side front spring? Mine seems broken or something, but it doesn't look broken. The car just sits low over there.

Probably will be a while before i do the springs, haven't even bought any yet. And my fronts are real old, seem to be the originals, sag and give a crappy ride. But when ever i do it, if you still need it, its yours.

Alright, thanks. You think it could be old shocks?

Steve, just curious, did you use the bushings that came with it?
if so, go to your local parts house and get some new poly bushings.
(I am thinking the sway bars use bushings)
correct me if I am wrong

The front sway bar uses bushings, but the Rear doesn't. Just the brackets and bolts. Turns out a left a bolt lose, so i go under there again and made sure everything was real tight, and its working perfectly.

The cool thing about bushings and stuff, the front sway bar I jsut got, had almost brand new end links with poly bushings, got all of it for 8 bucks. I love the junk yard.
