Hey, I was wondering if anyone had a link to the emissions laws for texas..specifically dallas. I'm wanting to put headers/exhaust on but i'm not sure what my limitations are. If anyone could help it would be great. Thanks. :)

Hey man,
I'm a State Inspector from Dallas Co. As far as emission laws, if the EGR systen hooks in to the exhaust manifolds then the headers are supposed to have the same hookups. There also has to be two catalytic converters if you do true duals, one per side, and must have a street mufflers that dump past the end of the cab. Other than that you can have cutouts, like Flowtech race readies, as long as there is no leaks and you are not running it open when you get it inspected. What you leave after you get the sticker is up to you (and the sound police).
hope this helps,

I'm having problems getting my 80 inspected in Pa, due to these emissions laws. F**K!!
I understand why they are being enforced, but most of us hot rodders have better and CLEANER running cars without this stuff than most cars out there today.
I'm NOT putting catalytic converters or a smog pump on my machine!
I'll pay the extra money for classic plates before i'll put stuff on that robs horsepower.

Exactly what I wanted to hear. Oh, and elcafreak...just put it on, get your tags and take it off. It takes 30 minutes at most to put on/take off a smog pump. Just gut the cats if you have such a strong hatred for them

I didn't mean to seem so upset. I was just hoping to get the truck inspected this last saturday. Here in Pa, I can get an exempt something or other. I still have to get all the info right. I hear something different from each person I talk to. It's all new here. They are just starting all this emissions this year.
I'll get used to it, and if I have to, I'll put them on.
Patience right?

Hey Doug.. does the state really make a 23 year old vehicle pass emmisions? That does su*&^k. That is really nit picking by the state. How many '80's vehicles are still on the road in PA anyway?

Best of luck.

Yea, you're telling me!!!
I guess since it had a cat and a smog pump on it from the factory, they want to see it now. That's what I'm hearing anyways.
I've had 2 people here that are close to me say that they can get it inspected for me, and if I happen to take the cats and smog pump off after I left the insp. station, there was nothing they could do.<winkwink>
I'm just going to have to take it and find out.
I MUST DRIVE!lol

Well it will cause all 80`s cars and trucks had smogs and cats and they are required if they arent there when you get stopped you can and will get fined mostlikely or get the car impounded. When i got my 79 ford pickup i was told at a inspection shop back in 83 that i could take it off since they werent on all vehicles and since i got a 79 el camino im just going to take mine off and get headers competition and straight back pipes with cherrybombs on them. they cant do a thing cause not all cars in 79 had cats hell this 79 elcamino dont even got a smog pump.

Yea, you're right. I'm going to clean up all the wires I've been messin with and just drop it off to a reputable insp. station and see what they have to say. I'm not worried about anything not passing, as I've been over this whole machine. I should feel good about it's shape. I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO DRIVE IT!!!! lmao

so far as adding headers. since the factory never offered dual cats on any GM vehicle except the Vette, you can not add on dual cats to any car in Texas that never had them offered from the factory. State law prohibits changing factory cat setup. so the headers must go to a y pipe, single cat, then can be split apart to dual mufflers. there are currently no aftermarket dual cat setups certified for older GM vehicles. someone needs to check the state inspection laws. the system must match the factory setup.
