My A/C on my 85 keeps kicking the compressor on then off then back on again over and over. Any ideas to the cause and a fix?

You are probably low on refridgerant. (R-12 if you haven't converted to R134a yet) My 77 does that sometiems in the spring, after letting it sit all winter long. Most likely have a slow leak in the system or you haven't had a recharge in a long time. It has just enough refridgerant in the system to turn on the A/C compressor (clutch), but not as much as it needs to keep running. It will normally do that sitting at a light or in park, but it should not do that on normal driving.

Seems to do it all the time at idle or going down the road..

My 86 used to cycle a lot too. Not now though! How did I fix it you ask? I let it sit long enough for it not to work at all now! A great fix for South Jersey humidity if I do say so myself

Have the refrigerant level checked. If it isn't low, come back and I will offer other suggestions, but low charge is the most common cause.
