Ok You all have talked me into an MSD6-A ignition upgrade on my stock 79. But I have a few concerns that even the goof balls at "THE ZONE" can't answer nor is it on the MSD web site. It has been stated that all components are included. My big concern is connecting it to my HEI system and the fact that I have a factory tach. Will it still work or will I have something else to buy. Does the 6-A use my existing coil? if not how does the 6-A connect? :?

It is easy to install & yes I still use my factory tach. You wire the box to the two wires going to the module inside so it bypasses it. The instructions that come with it are very easy to follow. I have installed over a dozen boxes on different cars or trucks with positive results on each. You can use the factory coil but you see better results with a higher output coil. You must use spiral core wires.

Thanks, Tommy
I've comunicated with MSD and they confirmed what you said. I am doin it right with the 8400 kit that has the box, coil brackets and wires. All I will need are the new spark wires. Again thanks for the reply. :D

I have had MSD boxes on all my cars are many years now & have always been pleased. Nowadays, the increase in gas mileage along makes them worth it for the long haul.

The MSD will come with two options on hookup to the HEI. You can use the stock module or bypass the module and use the magnetic trigger to signal the box. I would suggest you use the magnetic trigger and eliminate the module. Your tach will work ok and you should probably upgrade to a higher output coil, either in the cap or a remote coil. You have to upgrade to spiral wound wires. Good luck.

I also have the "Delux or Super conversion kit" in my 76 but unlike everyone else, my tach did not work. Matter of fact there is a whole slue of tachs that do not work with the MSD 6A box, the instructions inside the box explains which do and which do not. More are on the "Do Not" list than are on the "Do" list. My kit came with the Blaster II Coil, which is remote and I had to find a place for that big ol sucker to mount. It gets awfully busy under the hood with the Big 6A amplifyer and that remote coil.
Don't get me wrong I like the results of the upgrade it does run much better but still I feel there are some sacrifices from just a stock set up one was the Tachometer, I had to buy a new tack or spend the same amount on a trigger that hooks up to the amplyfier to use my old tack.

Well after looking for a place to mount the 6A I changed my mind and installed a Super HEI kit from MSD, added Accell wires and can not believe the difference of the start up and performance. This weekend going on a 200 mile round trip to check the gas milage. Thanks to all I'm very happy. :D :D :D

If you dont mind me asking. How much was that set-up? I'm thinking about doing some performance mods to my El Camino. Is this more of a driveability mod or performance mod? Also this is my first post on this forum and I have already gotten ideas on things I want to do.

I have not priced them in a while but you should get out under 200. It is both. One of those mods that help everything. Drivablity, gas mileage, emissions, & performance.

An MSD6A and a high output coil can be had for about $200. It is certainly one of the best mods you can make---for performance, better fuel mileage, better driveability and more reliability.
