call your local boneyard and compare, but personally, I think it is too much. (but then again depends on locale)

For 7.5 way too much. For an 8.5 that's about right. They're not cheap or easy to find.

It's a good deal if it's a POSI and is in good condition.(even though the going rate in NJ is about $500, that's for 7.5" rears) I'm not sure what g-body an 8.5" came out of though. I think even the GNXs had 7.5" rears. MAKE SURE IT WILL FIT YOUR CAR! I just bought an 8.5" 3.42 posi rear from a Buick GS. The seller said it would fit my 86, but it's 3" too wide. Seems that everybody including the installer (which ended up costing me a lot of money) forgot the last GS was made in 72 or so. I had to end up buying a 7.5" Monte SS 3.73 posi rear as soon as possible to save the costs of putting the OE rear back in only to replace it later. I ended up paying $800 for the Monte rear (not a good deal, but the cheapest option if you were in the situation) He was in so much of a rush the second time when he installed the 3.73 that he didn't even inspect the drums! On the drive home we found out the brakes were nowhere near as good as the originals. We should have thought to check the brakes since he had the doner Monte SS because it got hit in the front. It was probably hit because they couldn't stop fast enough with the crummy brakes!

I can buy used 7.5" G-body rearends from local U-Pull-It yards for $50 plus another $50 if I have them pull it out, I don't bother with them and consider 7.5" rearends disposible parts, unless it's just a swap of a bad rear in a non-modified car. $600 bucks for a 8.5" is not a bad price as long as it's in good shape. If it needs alot of work, than that's too much. A good condition 8.5" ready to swap in rearend will usually sell for around $800. A beefed up 8.5" (Moser axles and Eaton posi) will go for around $1200 or possibly even more depending on whats been done to it. $435+ shipping for a used 7.5" posi is outrageous and I don't care if it was being shipped from the moon. If anyone is looking for an 8.5" (non-rebuilt) let me know, I know someone down southeast that usually has 3 or 4 for sale at any time for $750+ shipping. PM me if your serious only please. If you plan on building a 400hp+ motor for your Elky, I recommend considering a 9" Ford rearend, these can run $1350 (you assemble) or much more depending on what's used in it. Also 68-72 Chevelle or Malibu 10 or 12 bolt rearends will work if you buy an aftermarket control arm kit. These are a little bit wider, but will work fine with the aftermarket contol arms. All GNX cars came originally equipped with 8.5" There is some question though as to if all Regal Type T's, and Olds 442s had them. The 72 GS rear should have been OK using the aftermarket control arms, the 72 GS used the same frame as the 68-72 Chevelle, therefore the same mounting points. The 3" additional width can be compensated by using offset wheels with more backspacing.

If you're talking about my rear problem, my car is an 86 and that's why it wouldn't fit. I didn't want to buy different offset wheels either.(I'm already out of money!) Yes, I know $800 for a Monte SS rear is a rip, but it would have cost more to have him put in the original rear only to replace it later. It was just a bad situation all around!

You didn't say if it was posi or not. If the 3.73 8.5" rear end wasn't pieced together, then it's either out of a G-body Olds 442, Buick T-Type, or Buick Grand National. Try to find out what the axle code is that's stamped into the front of the left side axle tube. That'll give you an idea as to what it came out of.

If it's a posi, and if it came out of one of the above mentioned cars, and if it's in good shape, it's well worth $600. That's a lot of if's huh? Do your homework before you hand over your cash!
