Ok, so I finally have money to do some stuff to my engine. I still have the 305, but I'm just gonna put the performance stuff in there for now and switch it over to a 350/383 later on (as in near christmas.) Anyway, what cam should I get? I'm gonna go with vortec heads, edelbrock headers...gotta have the emissions crap in dallas, and the nifty edelbrock performer intake. Price isn't much of an issue, I was mainly looking at comp cams but I dunno which one to get. Any help would be quite nice :)

I got the comp cams 268h for my 383.I have a performer rpm manifold for same-I'd sell it for $100.plus shipping.

If your going to change motors in less than five months, why spend the money. Buy the 350, put the parts into it before you install, and then make the change.

Am I missing something here?

Oh, I've always used Crane cams, lifters, rockers, and cam gears. When you change cams, dump the timing chain and get gears.

I wouldn't put anything into the 305, especially if your going to replace it in 5 months. Buy the right parts now for the 350 your planning.

Why don't you start putting together that 350 and forget about the 305. In many of my projects I start by making a comprehensive list of what I want to do and all of the parts it requires. Then I start collecting the parts and doing the work as budget and time allow. To me it's a lot easier than trying to get all the parts at one time and then rushing to get the project completed.

One thing I guess I should have said is that near christmas means anytime from then til next july/august. I'm simply looking for suggestions on which one to get, not whether or not you think its a good idea.
Oh and crane cams = not for my family. Bad experiences.
Hell if it makes ya feel better gimme suggestions on which to get for the 383 thing. Just lookin for a lil help.

Edit: Oh and maprii, I'm not going to go and spend all this money right now and hurry to put it in. It all comes with free time and paychecks. I'm just making a shopping list of sorts.

Oh...just a little dreaming out loud, we all do that. When it comes to building a smallblock Chevy the choices are endless--hundreds (maybe thousands) of cam choices, dozens of heads, endless intake choices, pistons/rods/cranks ad infiniti. You could dream up several hundred combinations and still have hundreds to go.

I'm surprised to hear your not happy with Crane cams. I'm 57 and have been using them since I was 14. I've never had one fail, even during the drag racing years.

Was it only one occurance? Did the motor blow? That could be 100 other reasons and not the cam.

As a Crane customer for over 40 years, I would never use another, even with price considered. They have never let me down, and I beat the living crap out of my hotrods.

However, make your car "your car". That's why we call them "hot-rods".

Let us know what you decide,
