I have decoded my VIN with no trouble, but as we know, that only tells us engine size, model, and factory. I understand the cowl tag can tell you trim level, options, color, and maybe even if the vehicle is an SS or not. I have looked in all the usual places, but I can't find a cowl tag on my '86. If there is one, where should I look for it? If not, then could I find that information on a build sheet? What places might I be lucky enough to find a build sheet?

According to what I've read, the '86 didn't have a cowl tag. It did have a "Service Parts Identification Label" which was located on the glovebox door or behind the seat. If found, it might contain some more info that you want.
The build sheet is the most accurate. Not sure on your year, but they have been known to be found in the headliner, between the gas tank and bed, and in the doors. I've never found mine  .
Others will correct me if I've given you the wrong info.

Thanks for the help guys. I've also heard of finding the build sheet under the carpet. I'll be changing that later this year, so maybe I'll get lucky. On the other hand, the headliner had already been changed by a previous owner, so I hope I didn't lose it there. I'll keep a look out for it as I freshen the interior during the next few months.
