Hey Bob,
If you are talking about the 3" dash speakers, Kenwood makes 2 different models that work and fit well. One model is coaxial and the other is a dual cone. I prefer the dual cone especially when using the factory radio.

I have a 1986 El Camino. I replaced the defunct original (basic) radio with one from a '80's Cadillac. Now the original right side dash (3"?) speaker is making noise. I notice the speaker grill is held in place by 2 screws. Can I just take these out and lift the speaker grill off for replacement? (By the way, the Cadillac radio is a perfect fit and in fact is just like the one pictured in the "Haynes" Repair Manual picture). I want to keep the placement of the speakers original and have no interest in door panel types. The replacement radio was $25 and is very simple to take out and put in. I was so pleased I went back to my favorite junkyard emporium and got another for a spare. No CD, but does have tape player/equalizer, etc. and looks 100% original. :D

Jesse, since your first post was here, let me just interrupt long enough to welcome you to El Camino Central & the National El Camino Owners Association. We are certainly glad to have you, and I am glad you are off to a good start, already posting and enjoying the forums!

Be sure to visit the Region 7 Forum (covering Ala, Ga, Tenn) and let everyone there know you are a new member. I beleive the members are trying to plan a spring show/meet in Georgia, so check out the topics there. I see you list southeast Georgia as your area (I assume around Kingsland or Brunswick), and so you are pretty close to me, as I live north of Jacksonville, FL in Callahan. Please dont hesitate to ask if I can be of assistance with anything related to the forums, or the message board. I will try to keep you posted as well on shows/meets here in NE Florida if you are interested.

Take Care,
Mike

The '86 has 3 1/2" speakers up front, actually. Circuit City sells some Pioneer ones for $50, and theyre amazing (though lacking any form of bass).
You can even hook them up to the old speaker wires (if you want to Macguyver it, as my dad so aptly puts it). Theyre a PITA to put in though, because theyre about 1/8" too tall to clear the glass, so you have to put the grill cover on after you have them in place.

Anyway, theyre really good speakers, and get very loud with little distortion. I would recommend getting a set of boxes and 6x9's to back them up, since as I said before, they lack all form of bass.

I just put in a pair of Blaupunkt 3 1/2' upfront and they sound really nice. I had a but of clearence problem .... butter or KY would have been helpful but after some wiggling they went in nice and sound great.
I picked them up on ebay for $19, they are 2-way coaxial with 90W max and 30 W RMS. You can't beat that deal. They're model # PCxt352
Keep in mind you have ot cut the factory plugs off and wire the included plugs to the wires in the dash but that's not big deal.
If you want you can get 5x7's Tri's for the rear and mount them in little boxes ($29) ...... that's a set that will be nice and clear for those of us who aren't trying to shatter our rear windows. Steppenwolf sounds just as good at 200W as it would at 1000W.

Try Q-Forms, kickpanel boxes. Available from Crutchfield (look under Buick Regal). Lets you use high-quality 5 1/4" speakers without any cutting or drilling. And, they can be removed if you want to sell your truck or restore to "factory look"....

don't u have to mess with your e-brake pedal with tose, though.

I read that also. They said you have to bend the ebrake pedal 1 1/2" to fit and relocate the computer under the pass seat. I don't know about anyone else but with the Elky leaks I wouldn't put my computer any closer to the floor than it already is .... I think speaker boxes in the smugglers box for $10 is a much better alternative. Keep it simple or you're just asking for more problems. Isn't personalizing these cars what this is all about anyway? Who wants a stone stock 5th Gen?!?!? They are a bit boring.
