okay well i recentilly bought a 82 el camino, it had some small wiring problems. my dumb frined put the battery on backwards and turned the igniton. i had to re wire the fusebox to starter, alt, and what not, now my problem is, the gas guage doesnt work(never did). but when i turn the lights on and turn the light swich to the right i belive the gas guage moves toward empty? why???? whats the problem there can someone explain what might be wrong and how the guage works so i can figure out the problem

my other question is. the car had cruise control, i took it out, the speedo cable to the speedo was to short and the other was just right but to the back of the spedomter instead of thread on its one of those quick relase ones, does anyone kno what other speedo cables fit? where i can go to autozone or a auto store and buy, i tryed alraedy but the autostore couldnt find a elcamino with no cruise cable.

another one, some elcamino have the monte carlo ss front ends on? my frined tryed to put a montecarlo ss front end on his 79 malibu and it was a inch 3 big on each side, malibu and elcaminos hoods r interchanble, but monte carlo isnt, yet i see some people with the front end on? hows that work?

i think thats all i got question wise
i hope i can be helped
thank you

Hey Joe,
I'll start with your second question first. the Monte Carlo fenders are different than the El Camino. What you might be seeing on the El Camino's is the Choo Choo Customs front end that was offered by Chevrolet for the El Camino in the 80's. They look nearly identical.
On your fuel gauge there are two posts, one goes to ignition the other to the fuel tank sending unit. You'll need to test for 12 volts when the key is on at one terminal and test for resistance on the other. When the tank is full the resistance should read 90 ohms and empty 0 ohms. You can test the gauge itself by disconnecting the sending unit at the tank and grounding it to the chasis of the vehicle, turn the ignition switch to the "On" position and see if the gauge moves or pegs the needle.

Hope this helps!
