: Top five vehicles you've owned
ElkySS 05-21-2003, 07:18 AM While posting a response to "Bobby" I mentioned a '56 Chevy Nomad I use to own. Made me start thinking of many of the vehicles I've previously owned. Thought I'd try to narrow the list of over 100 to the Top Five I've owned. It was tough but here's my list. If you've owned lots of vehicles how about listing your Top Five. If you've only owned a couple, list your favorite.
Here's mine: 1963 Corvette Split-window Coupe, 1957 T-bird, 1962 Corvette w/factory Fuel Injection, 2002 Corvette Z06, 1984 ChooChoo El Camino SS (shown below).
Honorable mention: 1965 GTO, 1969 SS/RS 396/375 Camaro, 1957 Bel Air 2-dr HT w/factory A/C, 1956 Chevy Nomad, 1987 ChooChoo El Camino SS.

workNprogress 05-21-2003, 08:55 AM well nothing as impressive as that but 65gt mustang, 65gt fastback, 71 Javalin sst with401(gawd i loved that car) this 3 were while in highschool. 70 Chevelle, 76 Formula Firebird, 79 Z-28.
By far the most impressive performance wise, was the AMC Javalin. With the exception of the engine I am currently building for my elkie, I have NEVER owned a car that was as rude, raw, and overpowering as the Javalin with the 401

#2- 1992 Geo Metro 135,000 and the only reason it was junked in 1997 was the fact that a DUI in a 78 Dodge van smacked it in the rear on the Pulaski Skyway. Even with the gastank in the back seat and 3 windows shattered I still got home with it.
#5- 1965 Fairlane S/W (great drive-in car)

#3- 1967 Chevy Caprice Station Wagon. You NEVER forget your first time...
#4 - 1963 black VW bug w/sunroof- I paid $75 and it lasted me almost two years!

I do wish that my husband hadn't had to sell a couple of the cars he had, especially a Trans Am Pace Car (I think it was a '78, but it was a cool looking car), but now that he's got me around he'll never have to sell any of his cars again.

GMheaven 09-20-2003, 05:38 PM Oh boy, I feel like such a traitor to classic cars now. No one here has a history like me:

theelcaminofactory 12-17-2007, 08:28 AM I've owned so many vehicles, it would be easier to list my least favorites. First one was a Ford, the second one was also a Ford...I gave them a second chance...that was a mistake. I used to be a big Mopar fanatic, when muscle cars were MUSCLE CARS...and cool! Bought a convertible Sebring about 3 years ago...owned it for 3 days (only because it was a weekend) before I returned it...no more Mopars now either! (ok now this is where we all chant) GM GM GM :banana2:
oldelky80 12-17-2007, 12:40 PM Top five only
1968 Mustang CJ
1957 Corvette-2X4 car
1964 GTO convertible
1967 Buick G/S
1972 Corvette roadster-took this one on our honeymoon 34 years ago.
Mr86Camino 12-17-2007, 03:42 PM I started driving back in 1970. Since that time I have owned 5 cars total. I still own two of them.
I tend to bond with my cars. I really HATE car payments.
#1 Favorite is my 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera. I bought it back in 1995. It is a big boy toy.
#2 Favorite is my 1986 El Camino that I bought in 1991. After 16 years of driving my Elky I still drive it everyday.
#3 Favorite is my 1974 Porsche 914 2.0 that I bought in 1974 and sold in 1996.
#4 is not that much of a favorite but it was a 1973 VW Super Bug
#5 was my 1st car. It was a $600.00 1960 VW bug with 36 hp. 0 to 60 in 54 seconds! My dad gave me an interest free loan but I paid for it. My dad's deal was the interest free loan, and he paid for the insurance until I turned 18. I had to pay for everything else. All the gas and all upkeep.
I plan to keep my Elky even if I have to convert it to hydrogen power someday when gasoline is no longer available.
I don't count my wife's car(s) even though my name is on the title. It is not really 'my" car.

Quintonsdusty 12-18-2007, 08:29 AM Here's the ones I have had the most fun with:
1. 1967 El Camino (current)
2. 1957 Chevrolet 2dr sedan (first car - rust bucket death trap)
3. 1960 Triumph Herald (owned with 3 guys in the service in the Panama CZ- made a convertible out of HT during dry season)
4. 1966 Lincoln Continental (w/ganster doors)
5. 1936 Plymouth 5 window business coupe (wish I had this back)
old_coot 12-18-2007, 09:08 AM Hummmmmm only five----ok
1 86 Buick Regal T-type bought new, still have it (Grand National without the markings)
2 69 Mustang convertible---428CJ auto A/C and am/fm /8track tape
3 65 GTO 389 tri-power four speed
4 66 Mercury Comet 427 side oiler with 4 speed and 2 four barrels
5 57 Chevy convertible 283 with a four barrel and three speed on the tree
The El camino is definitely in the top ten, but these five were probably my all time favorites.
elcamino74guy 12-18-2007, 09:41 AM Ok, here's mine. This is an old thread, hope I haven't already done this... :D
1. 79 Z28 - Most fun car I ever owned
2. 74 El Camino - Pure therapy
3. 2008 Mustang GT - 2nd most fun car I ever owned, Wish it was a Camaro though... :D
4. 79 350 Berlinetta - 2.41 gears but the most stable and smooth 130MPH I ever experienced
5. 88 Pontiac Grand Am LE - Olds Quad 4 motor- The only FWD car I could ever forgive for the torque steer, Front wheel burnouts were easy!
Had a few 90 toyota 2WD trucks that were pretty reliable and fun but not in my top 5...
Most hated cars I've owned...
1. 70 Plymouth Duster - More time fixing it than driving it, HAd a big fat A$$ too.
2. 87 Pontiac Grand AM 3.0 V6 - BIggest P.O.S. I ever owned funny since the 88 was so much fun. STuff broke on it every other week.
3. 81 Camaro - Another one that spent more time being fixed than running but it was my first car so I loved it at the time.
4. 86 Toyota Pickup - Had an automatic with a 4 banger. Most boring thing I ever drove. The loaner Civic wagon looking thing I once had to drive for a week was more interesting.

dougs85 12-18-2007, 08:30 PM 1. First car (age 15) 30 model A coupe with rumble seat.
2. 1936 Buick coupe, great car, totaled in wreak.
3. 46 Ford coupe, made a custom out of it. Nosed and decked, frenched headlights, Buick grill, hotrodded flat-head V8 engine. Shelled second gear out of it 7 times, would not take the engine's HP.
4. 67 Austin Healey 3000 mark III, restored it to showroom condition. Traded it in for a 74 Mercedes 450 SL conv. Big mistake, the Healeys are going now for $40,000. to $90,000. and up.
5. 62 Volvo 544, I want it back. Took lots of trophies in drag racing, 1/2 mile ovals, motor crosses and hill climbs. 1800 cc engine, warmed up with a 4-speed.
My 85 El Camino is no. 6 only because it is my current pride and joy.
And I still have a 1964-1/2 Mustang conv. Restored it to showroom condition.

slywun 12-19-2007, 09:49 PM I have had such a wide range of cars and loved so many but my top 5 include:
1. Cadillac CTSV
http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/3/4/9/5/9/4/webimg/89496639_o.jpg
Best car I've ever owned - period. Looking forward to the next gen.
2. 1988 Corvette - great car
3. 1988 CRX - (An oddball, but has 80K miles and still gets 51mpg on the highway, and is fun to drive)
4. 1973 Buick Centurion Convertible (Power Everything, huge engine, front seat bigger than some sofa's)
5. 1981 Z28 (built 383 - pretty quick)
I expect the El Camino take over, once finished.
dande83 12-21-2007, 06:44 AM 5. 1968 Porsche 911 (No V8 torque but after 100mph it flew)
4. 1968 El Camino (6cyl. Stick – loved this one)
3. 1968 Chevelle SS396 (My wife hated this one – Duck poop yellow outside, black interior, in hot Florida sun – but it commanded respect in 1971)
2. 1941 Buick Super Convertible Coupe (’47 Roadmaster Straight 8 engine)
1. 1961 Lotus Super Seven (Inexpensive kit car, 1100lbs. - Go Kart on Steroids)
Hard to choose favorites – they were all great for different reasons.
I’m just getting started on the ’83 El Camino.
This thread has been a great read for me. Most of us are remembering rides we had years ago, long since gone (GREAT MEMORIES). Last year I decided to recreate a memory for my brother of his 1957 Bel Air. I took a photo of another ’57 Chevy and “created” my brother’s car close enough that he thought it to be an actual photo of his car until someone else gave it away. I could never afford the “Stable” of cars I always dreamed of (I owned 3 Corvairs at one time, does that count?) but, I now hope to “create” what I did own from memory, on canvas.

Elky77 12-21-2007, 10:21 AM O.K., it's my turn. Most of you guys are young!
1. 37 Chevy five window coupe (at 14 yrs old.) Had it until I was 28. Three drive trains, some drag racing.
2. 53 Studebaker Silver Hawke. Rust bucket, vapor locks in the summer, but cool and classic looking.
3. 47 Dodge four door sedan (suicide doors). Great back seat for the drive-in.
4. 68 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible Brougham. More modern, lead slead, middle age comfort.
5. My current 77 elky. It will pass anything on the road except a gas station.
I wish I had kept every one of them.
Man, it's been a good life, so far!!!!!!!

Maximus84 12-22-2007, 08:31 PM 67 Chevy Camaro,68 Plymouth Roadrunner,73 Dodge Dart,77 Chevy Corvette,79 Chevy Corvette,65 Impala station wagon,77 Chevy Camaro.Oh,OK...five? Leave off the last two,then I guess...
Richard/SIA 12-24-2007, 07:19 PM Tough list, I'm only including the cars I got to drive, get tickets in, etc.
If I included everything I ever owned I would never get down to just five.
In their order of performance and fun!
1. Ferrari P4 replica, Blood Red, 1800 lbs wet, 215 Buick with four Webers, headers, big cam, 5 speed, 4 wheel disc, etc.
Over one "G" on the skid pad, 13.05 in the 1/4 mile at Willow springs, best handling car EVER, 18 mpg at 90-100 mph, about 150 top speed.
My only real show car, it was on several Kit magazine covers and center spreads.
Worth over $70K today, it got away from me years ago.
2. Jag XKE Roadster, Red, 3.8 DOHC 6, 265 HP, 150 MPH, 4 wheel disc, wire wheels, etc.
I used to annoy bikes on mountain roads with it, most could not out run me until my brakes faded.
I stupidly sold it to raise capitol for a business venture that did not work out. Worth about $50K today.
3. '59 348 El Camino with 3-2's, 4 speed.
Damn fast between clutch changes, sold it for something like $1,500 back in about 1988, after putting in about the fifth new clutch in six months.
From what I have seen on varied boards, worth about $40K-$45K today.
I have more into my current '59 basket case than I sold the 348 powered car for!
4. 1972 Triumph Hurricane 750.
Only about 700 made, newer bikes are faster, but the Craig Vetter Triumph Hurricane is the one I want back!
Now selling for $10K-$15K if you can find one.
5.*Austin Healey 100-6.
One of my first truly fast cars, lots of adventures, broken parts, illegal road and drag races won by me.
Another car I cannot afford to replace, about $30K today, I originally got mine in trade for about $200 of body work.
That's the top five, honorable mention goes to the Bug-Eye Sprite's, TR-3's, 70 Firebird Formula 400 with 4 speed (decent handling for an American car), Genie-Alfa sports racing car, MGA, Jag 120, Jag 140, Ferrari 330 GT I at least had a deposit down on and test drove (Price was only $10K, damn bank inflated the necessary loan to $15K, so I never got it, worth $70K two years later!), suped up Fiat 600 coupe (HOT 850cc engine and sorted out suspension, best sleeper ever!) among too many more to list.
Now I'm down to just a couple of fast car projects, the '59 (377" short stroke Chevy and six speed with IRS is the current plan) and a very rare Marcos 1600 that I'm putting a 2.0 Alfa Twin-Cam into.
Be careful what you let go of, if you think you will be able to replace it later, you may end up kicking yourself for the rest of your life!
1BadElky 12-24-2007, 07:43 PM I've only had 3 vehicles, but that's pretty good for 17 I guess.
1. 86 El Camino of course. Took it apart in June and am resto-rodding. Can't wait to drive that new 350!
2. 88 Mazda B2200 5 speed- bought less than a month ago as a beater, $800+ a few repairs (new gas tank, brake MC and wheel cyl., and a basic tune-up).
3. 88 S10 4x4- This truck will stay at the bottom of the list. My original beater bought for $700. 2.8 v6 engine ran fine for 210k, but the auto trans took a dump, and if you've never had to replace the transmission in a 4x4 S10, I'll tell you it's terrible. From beginning to end. I swear I never imagined that everything could fight me as much as it did. I replaced it with a junkyard trans and sold it for $900 a week after changing it because I didn't have high expectations from the junk trans.
oh, and it got 13.8 mpg. lol
Bowtie 12-24-2007, 08:27 PM Wow! What a thread! If you need proof that the automobile is an important part of our culture this thread is a good place to start.
My top 5? Hopefully, the next 5 will be the best:
2010 Camaro SS, Z28, or whatever.
2012 Elk Meano (by whatever name)
Maybe a Corvette Z10?
X-1 (Non GM)
X-2 (Non GM 2)
Merry Christmas :xmas:
1BadElky 12-24-2007, 08:33 PM 2010 Camaro SS, Z28, or whatever.
holding out for a 'vert?
Bowtie 12-24-2007, 08:50 PM Who knows? Maybe one day mid-life crisis will hit and I'll want a V-10 Vette Vert. :sneaky: Truth is, I just put Vette in the list because this is a GM based club. Never know though, feces occurs.
Merry Christmas :xmas:

8) Little did we know back then that these old cars nobody seemed to really care about would someday be worth a small fortune! :( But hey! We had a blast beating them to death!!!
gtohrl 12-30-2007, 10:00 AM Yeah buddy!
I agree with you PaPa Johns 77.
We sure had a LOT of fun with those cars.
Run em hard and heavy, then move on to another one to beat up on.
First 65 GTO I bought, I paid $150.00 and beat the piss out of it.
Was fun times and hard work back then, but we sure had a lot of fun with each one of them.
Yuppies and the kid's today really missed out on some street fun times back then.
We could actually work on them and almost afford to work on em too!

ElkyHolik87 11-25-2008, 02:17 PM great thread! I just turned 21 and to date only owned 3 cars and here they are from first to current.
#1 1989 Lincolin town car.
#2 1969 VW Bus.
#3 1968 el camino.
#1 My Lincolin. I bought it when I lived by my self when I was 18. bought it with 167,000 miles on it for $950. I beat it up like there was no tomarrow, its as fast as my elky. It took me whever I wanted to go with no complaints. Toped out at 115 mph. I broke the tranny a year and a half later with 196,000 miles on it, but I still have it :-D It was like sitting on a lazy boy with a steering wheel in front of you.
#2 My VW bus, least faverate. Cool car people loved it I got more compliments then I do with the elky :-( girls really loved it. I probably would have not sold it if it didnt need so much work. paid 500 for it with a rebuilt motor and tranny put 700 into it drove it for 2 and a half months then sold it for $2700 to get my elky
#3 My 68 elky the best car I ever owned. I love it I love it. I'm sure I'll never sell her I want it to be a show car, give me time it'll happen. Paid $3400 for it came with a extera set american raceing rims. befor I bought it it was in storage for 2 years the 327 was rebuilt 3 1/2 years ago. below are pics of my lincolin and elky
closer9 11-25-2008, 03:14 PM :)
Well, that's a tough choice, but here are my three in no particular order...
1. The '77 Camino that I recently sold... :( 350/200-4R
2. Belle - '67 Belvedere convertible 318/727
3. '08 Avalanche - not a hot rod or anything, but the most versatile, comfortable, etc, etc... I love this truck! 5.3L/Auto/4WD
4. '92 Camaro 3.1L/5-spd. Did a lot with this car, but sold it shortly before swapping in a 350TPI
5. '04 Mustang GT 4.6L/5-spd LOTS of fun... I had to make a decision, restore the Belvedere or drive the Mustang... I ended up driving my Camino daily, and restoring the Belvedere...

Heres my list of cars I've owned over the years;
1) 70 Dodge Pick Up Truck Show Truck. (1st ever set of wheels), 440 Magnum, purchased for $3500.00. was shown in Hot Rod Magizine Jan 1977 Issue. This was by far the best of all my rides I've owned. Sold to a kid for $5500.00, after I blew the motor.
2) 71 Fury not sure of engine size, but it was a big block. Paid $700.00 for it. Put a set of Micky Thompsons on the rear and sold for $2500.00 a week after getting the car.
3) 72 Datsun Pick Up. Bought for $900.00. Destroyed while out 4 wheeling with the 4x4 club. I rolled it over and had to leave it in a ravine in the mountains of NM.
4) 71 Dodge Charger. This Dodge had a 360. I ran great, but body was trashed, I traded a stereo system for it from another airman while at Holloman AFB. He was leaving for Germany and couldn,t take it with him. The Charger was stolen after I got out of service. Copps found it, but it was stripped out.
5) 69 El Camino. Hope to turn into the best ride I've ever owned. Still working on it. Oh I can't forget about my daily driver,
Its a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser. When I get done paying for it $47,000.00.

1950 Ford Business Coupe - purchased in Japan and shipped back to USA in 1968

67 Chevelle 396 SS, ordered new with bench seat 4spd, 4:56 posi, 350hp (rated)
this probably was my most favorite. Had to sell in 67, UNCLE SAM was calling :)
70 RR 383 with a 727 trans (beep-beep)
could go on and on, but never really kept any that long. Of course, like was mentioned earlier by several members, run them hard (all the time) and go to the next one. If I'd of known they were gonna be worth so much today, well, I probably would have still sold em, never had the room or money to keep any. Different story today, that's probably why the back forty (as I call it) has half a dozen awaiting my attention. Yeeha!
lc2kenny 12-18-2008, 05:02 AM In order I owned them,
81 El Camino first car, let my mom drive it once in high school and someone hit her head on, it was then stolen from the body shop
85 El Camino (the same one I have now, I sold it a few years ago and bought it back)
87 Turbo-T high 11 second ETs on pump gas and drag radials, stolen, painted purple and gutted
91 Talon TSi mostly stock daily beater, 200k+ miles, never broke anything major, still miss it
87 Turbo-T high 10 second car, no cage, working ac, etc, sold when I started college
I also had a 67 Nova at one point that I sold to my brother and he ended up selling to someone in NY. Had a CA Chassisworks front clip, I miss that one too.

hemi57 12-21-2008, 04:56 PM Is your Monaro like the HQ Monaro (Nightrider's car) from Mad Max? I'd love to get my hands on some kind of Aussie muscle car...
You obviously did your research '74 Monaro = HQ.
It has been so long since I watched Mad Max but I believe you right, I think it was the Nightrider who had the Monaro which was the same as mine, even the colour (except mine had the orange highlight panels on the bonnet (hood) and boot lid (trunk)). They came with Aussie V8s, 253 & 308, and Chev 350s. Nice car.

Nyeh2007 02-25-2009, 08:52 AM Well, I'm only 19 so I've only had three cars. I started out with my mom's Chrysler Cirrus, then I bought my first car a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro RS, and last October I bought my 1987 Chevrolet El Camino. I still have my Camaro, but I plan on selling it and making the Camino my daily driver.

1984 Buick Grand National, mostly stock, not real fast, but beautiful for sure!

1974 Lincoln Continental Mark IV, beautiful slow boat, chick magnet.
2007 Subaru Impreza WRX, mostly stock, nimble rice rocket, dude magnet... :???::yell::poke: (no that's not a good thing)

Marv D 07-12-2009, 08:02 PM Wow, someone dug this one up out of the archives eh.
I'll cry as I list these I'm sure
1. 1968 Corvette coup w/ full Mako Shark package., T-top, L88 427, M22, today this car would be worth 100k easily,, maybe 2 or 3. The Mako was extremely rare. I sold it for $2250 in 1975
2. 1969 Olds 442, 400, 4spd A/C, buckets,, all the creature comforts but was a freeking ROCKET Got a ''exhibition of power or speed" ticket second week I had it, couldn't afford insurance any more,, sold it BACK to my dad.
3. 1966 GTO 383, PG, really nothing special but some 'special events' took place in that car. Will always have a soft spot in my heart.
4. I was 25 years old, had a 18month old and a 3 year old. Wife up and disappeared with our pos 66 Caprice, checkbook, and my cousin. My dad gave me his 1976 El Camino Classic so me and the boys would have transportation. Really nothing that special, white with pinstripes, 305, Th350 and 15" cragars. But when your life is on the dumpster and all of a sudden you are handed the keys to something NICE,, Life starts looking up.
5. Last but DEFINATELY not least. Not just because it's the current one, but this one holds the memory of someone, and a time special to me. The old man had one in 67, he bought and tore this one down in the 80's to reserect his youth I think. That was right after he gave me his 75. But it sat for 20+ years in pieces. He didn't live long enough to finish it,, but I just did. Maybe not exactly what the old man had in mind,, but I know he'd be happy with the results.

65 Impala SS 300 horse 327 with 4 spd. Factory bench seat with center dash tach. I should have kept this one. A rare set of options. Beat it to death.
65 Corvair 180 turbo. Later converted to mid engine with 455 olds Toronado drive train. It was my daily driver for two years after the divorce. For some reason the X didn't want it even though she wanted everything else. LOL
68 Vette 427 4 spd. Most uncomfortable car I ever owned.

Keyser Sose 02-11-2010, 06:22 AM hey 464, does this sound familiar?
Was talkin with my dad one day, showin him the 455 LeSabre (it was loaded! a Palm Beach Edition 2 dr). He turned and looked at me and said, quite exasperated, "Why can't you ever leave well enough alone?"
What do you mean?, I asked.
You change every car you get!
True, I replied, but when it's well enough, then I leave it alone!
P.S. My 1st car was a 2dr 60 Olds 88 w/394. wish I had it back!
Same with my 99 maxima V6, 5 spd (bose stereo too) Plus it had 96K miles on it last yr when I paid $1250 for it!! (fun to drive, I live in WV)

steelybill 02-11-2010, 05:06 PM Many of us ( the older ones here) have had cars that we wish we still had. Sad isn't it! And many of those cars we had would be worth some bucks these days. Like my two Lincoln Zephyr coupes, etc
Hind-sight really is 20-20 !!

Red71 02-11-2010, 08:21 PM Only one worth mentioning (other than the current project).
67 El Camino - all factory equipped with:
396 BB
12 Bolt
M21 or 22(?) 4 SPD
Console with clock
Tach/left signal combo
Front disc w/ 4 piston
Butternut yellow w/ blk vinyl top
Car was mint but sold it about 4 years ago :dontknow:. When I first brought it home I was all excited only to have my 11 year old son tell me how ugly it was. That was before I took him for a little RIDE. When the back end broke loose as I hit 2nd and his head pressed back against the seat, HE WAS HOOKED. His 1st car? A 71 El Camino!
