I'm in Ohio, with my 82 and i have to have the converter on my ride.. The exhaust shops here said they have to run the headers into my converter and run a "Y" pipe out and dual it out....

My question is; if i have to have this done then whats the difference between keep the stock manifolds and running "Y" pipes? Is there really that much performance difference?

Ray, do what I did go to the DMV on 40 and register it as a Collector car and do what ever you want to the exhaust meaning no CATS. TEE HA HA.

Headers will always generate more ponies and torque then the stock manifolds. Even with the "Y" pipe set up. Headers will be louder under the hood and possibly in the cabin area but flow better than the stock stuff. If you've got some really nice heads and really nice intake and carb then headers is the way to go. IMHO

Dan, don't they have to be more than 25 yrs old to be registered as a collector? Maybe I'll call and find out...

Thanks

I also put them on mine back in 1999 before it was 25yrs old and had no problem getting them because I did not want to mess with E-check. What is amazing is that DMV treated me like a king no lines to wait in one person came down from another floor to do my paperwork paid and went home. But now that it reached 25 I get regular plates, CHEEPER.

Dan, you're the man, ,, i just called the DMV and Exhaust shop,,, all i have to do is register the vehicle and then i'm all set,,,that shop told me $300 from the headers back with 2 1/4" tubing and turbo or glasspacks... Now i need to buy some headers and find a good $300.

I got my headers from Jegs bought 3" sticks of pipe and made my own exhaust for under $200 for all.

Thought about doing it all myself but, i don't have a welder and I know it will need to be tack welded pretty good.
