: New guy w/86 on LI looking for advice

Hi all, we're located on LI and we just purchased a beautiful 86 and awaiting delivery. It has only 5,000 since a frame off restoration and modification. Here's a picture.

I will be looking to add a hard tonneau (prefer roll up or fold up) and a removable bed liner to protect the cargo bay. Are there any dealers on LI or Queens that you can recommend? I'd prefer to deal with someone face to face than by mail order.

I also want to replace the stock 85 MPH speedo with a 120/140 unit as well as install a tach as there is none now. Any vendor recommendations? I'd love to put in all white guages!

Any help would be appreciated.

Great find, Leo! What part of Long Island? I worked at the Shoreham plant from late 1980 til 1994. Loved it out there!

I seriously recommend you get a hard fibreglass bed cover from Gaylord's of California. For bad weather climates like the Northeast, they cannot be beat. Also provides a good, secure place to carry and store things with the locking system they have.

You can see my bed cover by clicking the link below. Good Luck in keeping it as perfect as it appears. Give us all a clue about where you found it and the current value, please.

I've already decided on the white smooth finish Gaylord's and the carpeted bed. Both will be installed next week probably.

My wife first saw it on ebay and I had someone go check it out. I was lucky in that I knew an online forum member from my Lincoln club who was able to go see it. This all happened inside a period of less than 24 hours, it was very quick and very sudden and needless to say, I haven't slept since worried that it may be too good to be true. Although... the day it was delivered to the terminal in Little Rock someone from the terminal called me and made me an offer $3000 MORE than what we paid for it!

We shall see...

Good Luck with it-I can't wait to drive out and see it!! Where did you finally decide to but the Gaylord top??? Like John said--and we both have owned the Gaylord setup--it cant be beat--

Leo, The picture is very nice, good luck. I have an 87 and am afraid to put all the holes in the body for the Gaylord lid. I'd avoid a bed liner as these end up rubbing the paint off the bed. I like the color coded spray in liners but it's too permanent. I'd also like to see it. I live directly behind Lou Camino and have yet to see his. I will post some pictures of mine this weekend. Best of luck. 8-)

I'm still working on it cleaning it up as I'm totally anal about a clean engine and car. I've had to do some unexpectewd repairs like all new rotors, pads, and brake lines up front as they were so bad as to be dangerous. Also a bunch of other little things that have managed to add up :(

Today I discovered the passenger side floor was wet, there is a leak somewhere! The car has not been in the rain for five years so something is dried out.

It's almost good enough to put into a show so instead of the Lincoln I may put it in a show just to see how it fares either at PAL in Holbrook this Sunday or Bar Beach (Roslyn) next Sunday.

I'll decide by tomorrow and I'll post it here, I'd love to meet you guys!

I'm holding off with the full liner so I bought a rubber bed mat for now and I'll see how that goes. The bed is so perfect it's a shame to cover it! The Gaylord will probavly go in next week, I definitely need that.

That Bar Beach show sounds good to me. Maybe I can pull off the Pal show also. If I see you there I'll make myself known. My El Camino will be in the parking lot as I get nuts spending a whole day at the show.

OK, I'll be at PAL in Holbrook on Sunday but not with the Elky, it's not quite ready for a show yet. I'll have the Lincoln in the show so if anyone does come by look me up, red Lincoln Mark VIII probably with a white EZ-up behind it. You can't miss me either, big guy, red hair & beard.

I'm 99.9% sure I'll have the Elky ready for the Bar Beach show on October 10. I just need to finish up detailing the engine and some rough interior spots.

Oh, I got the kit today from Grant that allows me to remove the steering wheel when parked... definitely very cool! Easy installation, works great.

I tried to email LINY with no luck. I have had the 86 since labor day and havent seen him. It is a dog compared to his rides. Now I will have to drive infront of his house so he will still talk to me
