Fifth and fourth gen frames are not interchangable.

73 to 77 frames only should fit and you should check the parts books for interchangablilty between those years (sometimes there are slight differences). El Camino and Sprint should be totally interchangable but only within the above listed years.

is the only difference between 4th gen and fifth the wheel base could fifth gen be altered?

The differences would be the wheelbase, the width (the 4th gens were a few inches wider than the 5th), the body mount positions (the different generations did not share any body parts, including floors), the frame ends (for connecting bumpers) and the contours of the underbody.

. . . other than that, you might get it to fit.

I had a 73 Chevelle (same basic frame as the 4th gen Elky with a different wheelbase) and two fifth gen Elkys. I can tell you that they are very different animals. To alter the larger frame to fit under the smaller car, you might as well just build your own frame.

78-87 GM cars of similar body styles (Monte Carlo, Regal, Cutlass, Grand Prix, Malibu) are all based upon the same basic frame, Although all of the listed above would need modifications to fit your Elky, they could be made to fit. Malibu is probably the closest, but the wheelbase is different. between the 2-dr, 4-dr, wagon and Elky.

I have a Rolling Chassis for a 73-77 El Camino. This is a rust free Arizona chassis! I had the whole car sent to New England (Ct.), just wanted the body. If you live in the east and are looking for a clean complete chassis this is the one for you! Not sure if I can post prises here on this forum so Email me for info. and pictures.

As I understand it the 5th Gens were the only El Caminos to have a unique frame, the other Elkys shared the basic frame with Chevelle, Malubu or full size Chevy.

As long as you are talking about the station wagons that's a true statement. The coupes and sedans are a little different.
