: How do you drive your Elky?

This one occured to me tonight as the gray primered, sunroof installed, baby mooned, roll pan wearing 5th Gen. El Camino was about a foot off my rear bumper while I was going as fast as the car in front of me. Once he got passed on the right he took off after nearly running a few people off the road (about 65-70 in a 45mph zone in VERY heavy traffic weaving in and out) Here's the classic part. Once all that was done, he turns down a side street. When he slowed down all the 45mph (most doing 50?) traffic caught up! Haha! I just don't see the method behind the madness at nearly $2 a gallon. Geez, I'm getting old!

Do you drive your Elky as a cruiser? A road racer? A drag car? OR an uneducated backwoods hillbilly who couldn't afford a Trans Am!?

If you're the latter, please look up this episode of King of the Hill, watch it if you get a chance!

170. The Redneck on Rainey Street
Kahn has a redneck conversion when Connie is rejected from Rice summer school. Since good grades and community service aren't enough to get her into the university, Kahn decides to give up his middle class ways to live like a beer-drinking, El Camino-driving, ATV-riding redneck.

I like to cruise at the moment with gas like it is. Once I get my motor built I'm sure I may drive a bit heavy on the foot but not in bumper to bumper traffic. That just about justifies every sterotype there is of El Camino owners.

I hope everyone just stays safe, they aren't building anymore El Caminos.

I drive my '76 Sprint so that I'm always leading the pack. Since I drive it 40 mile round trip to work and back, I can't stand following other people and risk the chance of more rock chips. In the last year I've gotten two new chips in the windshield, and far too many chips in the paint to count. I'm the guy that's always 5mph over the speed limit. I wont follow too close to people in front of me for fear of more rock chips. But once I notice an opening to pass, I'm long gone. http://www.v8buick.com/images/smilies/3gears.gif

I've got a 99 Taurus for my daily driver and my elky isn't street legal yet but mine will be a weekend cruiser and might see a few trips to the local 1/4 1/8 track to see how it runs.

Now one night if I'm at a light and some kid is in a 4 banger ricer and wants to go on green you can bet my foot will be in the floor letting him see what the back end of a 4th gen elky looks like.

In high school I used to race my 77 elky and drove it like a bat out of hell.

Most of the time I drive at or below the speed limit, I get passed a lot. Many people stare at me as they pass, I like to think they are admiring my ride but I really think they are wondering what an old fart is doing in a racy looking car and why is he driving so slow. However if the urge overtakes me and long dormant hormones rear their ugly little heads smoky tires are only a turn of the NOS valve and 3 inches of throttle pedal travel away. Long live excessive horsepower!

hey mrapii, can i have your car? :)

heh, well i drive the ol death chariot gently, because of gas, and i need this car to hold together (i know it will, but i cant risk anything). I really want to get a new rear end in it, to get some better acceleration, because my elky is pretty slow...

lets see here, i try to keep it under 60 most of the time. My girlfriends father has yelled at me a few times for letting loose on the "flats" ( its a flat straight away in my town). I have pinned it pletny of times and almost three times a week, it eats gas but its so fun. I squeal the tires every chance i get, i have poped one tire already. Its only a 4.3 fut i can keep up with the ricer civics. Them civics suck. In the rain i have to let off the pedal at the stop lights becasue the tires just keep on spinning. I need to get a posi rearend with 3.73 gears in it. I also am picking up a 350 for 200 bux, and then i am golden gonna womp some ricers then. I wanna see someone with a big gay wing come to a stop light with me, that oughta be fun haha. overall i think i cruise with and edge!

Strickly as a Cruiser. The suspension is much softer than my daily driver - '96 Cavalier. I drive my Elky only on the weekends, it's old :-( , but a hella more fun to drive :P .

I 98% agree with Mrapii Most of the time I drive at or below the speed limit, I get passed a lot. Many people stare at me as they pass, I like to think they are admiring my ride but I really think they are wondering what an old fart is doing in a racy looking car and why is he driving so slow.

But..... and it really doesn't take to much, but the brain goes back my to my Elky youth days and....like dennis68 say's "Drive it like you stole it"

When I do, I know I'm just a few feet or MPH away from getting a ticket, but I do like it.

She is definatly a cuiser though I never pass up stop light races. It is just a really nice truck to cruise around in no need to end its life to save 3 minutes on my way to work.

For the most part I drive pretty conservative. I run at a max of 10 mph over the speed limit on the interstate and within 5 mph around town.

But I'm here to tell ya, I did not build a strong big block, hook it to a built 700R4 and 3.31 posi just to ease along!!! 8)

I will stop at a safe place and lite the drag radials up and wind it out from time to time. If I can't have fun with it I don't want it!!!

I believe finding a "safe" place to wind out is acceptible, but that's in my own book which of course isn't the same as everyone else's and for sure wouldn't be considered the right thing to do. :o

Actually, on a recent trip back from NC I had a virtually vacant 4 lane road with the speed limit of 65-70. It was so open and wide I drifted over 100mph quite a few times and cruised at 90mph. There was just no traffic on it. When I came up near a car I'd slow down to 73-78 mph depending on what the speed limit was. Not being scared of it being a cop, just trying to find a somewhat safe passing speed without giving the driver a heart attack if it was an "older" person.

This of course was in my stock rice burner, my Elky would probably blow at 80 mph+.

As far as a drag race. Who can resist that? Still, bumper to bumper traffic isn't the place to drive like Speed Racer.

Keep it safe.

I bought a 78 with a near perfect body. Sense I'm almost 40, and in no big hurry to get anywhere, I tend too baby my El Camino. Going fast is fun, but not in city traffic. My whole goal for this car is a nice cruser. I love hot rods, but this is too nice of a car too be beating on. I just want too be able to take her out on a nice summer day for a ride through the hills, and maybe cruse the buger joints on the strip in the evenings.

...mostly ;)
I bought the truck to haul my bass -- got tired of stuffing my rig into the back of a sedan, and there's no spectacular moves with expensive stuff riding in the bed. It's also hauled stuff for kids moving out of the house, even on cross country trips.
And the car needs the front end rebuilt before getting enthusiastic in curves.
But even the old 305 can spin one tire from a stop and sound socially unacceptable. Besides, I wouldn't want the secondary jets to get gummed up with old gas...

I don't drive mine TOO hard. lol With my newly rebuilt engine and STRONG 350 auto, and what I believe are 3.83 gears it just jumps out at stop lights. I don't even try, and I look back and everybody else is behind me.
I can ussually get both tires spinning with lots of smoke when I power brake it. he he he I LOVE IT.
Nicest car I ever had.

I usually do the speed limit, driving in the slow lanes... I like to go slow so more people can check out my ride 8) Then, if necessary, like getting around someone even slower than me -- I enjoy jumping on it for a few minutes, then usually back off, and get back in the slow lane!

my '83 elky, being my first car,i drove that like i stole it,i even had that sticker in the driver's quarter window. my '85 is pretty much a cruiser especially with the crappy trans, but it can go fast when i want it to. and once i fix up my '83 again it will be a cruiser too.

I just trailered my newly aquired "restorable" '68 elky 900 miles back to colorado from Tx. Still had the Tx. classic plates on it and they were still good.....couldn't hurt to take a little cruise....second corner I turned I floored it and heard the tires SING! Black ribbons, baby! (a prelude of things to come!) I got a ways to go to restore this car, but at least I had a taste of where I'll end up!! 8)

Well, I just use it for the cruising stuff. The bed has a color matched spray on bed liner that hasn't been used since it's application and the cruck has under 50k miles.

In fact, I spend more time tinkering on it than driving it. Maybe some day things will be the opposite: But for now it's just an expensive hobby.

Enjoy

I am with you there. You may have even seen my El Camino, purchased from Redding CA off eBay and now driven occasionally, in Las Vegas, brown '83 model with a canopy. I spent a bundle just getting it running right, and am not about to screw it up with a lot of hot rodding antics. Of course I was 39 when it was built, and now I am 60. Time to slow down. Love those weekend drives to the grocery store or just to take a scenic drive along Lake Mead. What is the rush?

I usually drive a bit faster than the posted limit, you know, 25-30 miles over or so....just enough to scare my wife.hehe. My car is soooooo dog gone fast..........it's like a movie. ( in my mind, MY car is still torn to pieces in my driveway, WISHING it was hauling butt on some long straight stretch, breaking all the speed limits, and johnny law fading into the background.................wishin' he had enough power to catch me. Just like those Duke boys!!! HAHAHA.) ***I'M SUCH A LOSER**** :(

You ARE crazy mike! lol I really can't make mine slow down. It's an injetction of testoserone every time I drive it(which is every day LOL) I can't get enough. I SWEAR!
It even sounds better than every other mustang you hear every day. They all sound the same to me.
As far as how FAST I drive? Hell I don't even know. My speedo is broken. he he he Odometer works but I think I killed the speedometer. 8)

I built my motor and am working on building the rest of the car to be driven hard. I drive it hard now and am really just waiting for something to break, then I'll replace it.

In town I keep it civilized but on the highway with no traffic I've buried the speedo and kept going. Don't know exactly the fastest mph I've been but I do know the tach has read 5200 in third with 2.73's. 8)
