The one called the Raunchero! I know the true story of how it came to be, you see, Ford Motor Company begged (on their knees mind you) GM for permission to make a vehicle similar to the El Camino. But if Ford did, they would be violating copyright laws. GM gave them permission but only after Ford agreed to let the GM designers design the Raunchero. Now those designers weren't stupid. They figured that if they designed something as ugly as the Raunchero that it would not sell well except to the hardest of die hard Ford fanatics. Now to make a long story short, those GM designers were correct in their thinking. And that is why the Raunchero is the ugliest El Camino you will ever see! I used to tell this story everynight to my son when he was little as I tucked him in for the night!

I can't believe you don't like my truck!

No just kidding :P

I really do like em all. Each successive generation has its own character to it. Each one speaks of a different time where things were viewed differently. The first generation being from the "Jet Age" Rockets and Flying Emblems spewing out as to say "Look Out I coming through!" Likewise GM designer folded the fins down like wings. Buck Rodgers type lights in the back, Smile on its face. Expansive room.

Still with a rocket type body design the second generation grew from the 64 to the 67 to be more sharper in the front. The 68 design changed dramatically and evolved through 72. So many really Muscle looking Muscle cars with huge horse power engines. Then EPA started designing cars' Motors. So Goodwrench put Luxury and Handling over speed and performance. So the fourth Generation cars and El Caminos were built for the ride and comfort. Heavy from safety laws enacted and anemic from EPA 's understanding of the Internal Combustion Engine. Still they have class.
The final generation went through lots of other EPA requirements while GM was attempting to re-tool "Modernize" and generally phase out the last of the big metal rear wheel drive cars, including but not limited to the Camaro.

So I think each one tells a story. If you're the driver and you listen really well you hear it. And then I smile. :D

i think that the 1st and second gen is the ugliest they don't have the curved transition between the bed and the cab like the 4th gen's do... hell none of them do except the 4th gens... and the 5th gens are just two small... the 3rd gens rocked but the 4th gens are definitely second... when it comes to looks i never liked the boxy look of the 5th gens... plus you can haul a lot more in a 4th gen... they are more truck than car... And when they are painted black they they really stand out... i never understood why people down the 4th gens they are good looking trucks..

Camino LS6

The better question would have been which gen looks best.

At least I am sure about my answer on that one: Third Gen!

But I like them all.

Talk about reiving the dead... :P Last posting on this thread was 2003!

4th gens are so misunderstood! I was just telling mine, the other day, how it's not that people think it's ugly, they're just jealous!

They all rock! Especially MINE! :P 8)

This is reminiscent of dog show logic. Though many breeds are present, all are judged by certain qualities and standards. An Elky should be judged the same way. It's not the generation that matters but how well it is presented.

Nevertheless, we all have our preferences. In a dog show, I may find a Puli to be "ugly" because of all of that hair. However, underneath all of that hair, there's probably a really nice looking dog. Fourth gens. are like that for me. They're not my favorite, but who am I to knock it if another sees the beauty in it?

8) I just like all ElCaminos in general. While my first one was a 59(Gen.I) and I wish I had it back I now own a 77(Gen.4) that I saved from the crusher. I hated the look of them when that body style came out. While searching for an Elky I found my favorite was out of my financial reach in a restoreable form and the Gen.5s were too numerous to appeal to me (besides most were so rusted around here) and the other years were non-existent or too over priced for me. That was when I ran across the 77 and saved it. Now it is going on 10 years and after selling it and buying it back 2 times from one of my sons I am finally getting it towards paint. I had it 3 years and sold it to my son after I hurt my back and couldn't work on it but found I missed it a lot and when it broke down on him he asked if I wanted it back and I jumped on it! Yes the bodystyle I hated as a new design had grown on me. I got her running and was driving her every day when my son decided he wanted her back so since I still owed hom for her Ilet her go again. Then he bought a ricer and decided he didn't want her again (his girlfriend didn't like trucks) so I bought her back and now I would not let her go for anything. I even was told about a 59 that was nice shape and reasonable but had no interest in it. Yes I love my 4th Generation Elcamino! But then I love them all!

Man, I think they're all beautiful and I would not hesitate to make love toooooo.... errrr..... I mean, uhhhh, I would not hesitate to own any year! It's like asking which of these 5 hot supermodels is the ugliest? Well, since there has to be an answer I guess it's going to be the supermodel that's carrying around the extra 10 pounds and has the bdonka donk butt! Even though she's still smoking hot! :P

I agree, it's just silly. We all know that the rear ends we have are just fine the way they are. Having said that it's clear that some would like to beef them up a bit and that's just fine too-so long as they do it for the right reasons :D

hehe...good thing my friend isn't a part of this, he's got a 74 ranchero. was his first car that he bought of his grandfather when he was 16. he drove it 2 yrs and his parents bought him a 83 trans am. since then(summer of 93) it's been parked up north, rutted in the ground. it would probably take a 4x4 to pull it out.

Elky77

OK, some models of the 4th gen are "goofy". Camper caps that look like they will slide off, rubber strips in the center of the bumpers (what was that all about?). Doors that are five feet long and sag at the hinges after ten years and need new pins and bushings every five years.

But, shave all the trim, smooth the bumpers, dump the camper cap and add a vynle bed cover; and they are smooth and flowing. A simple pin stripe along the top of the fender, top of the door and top of the quarter really sets off the nice flow.

It's like the ugly duckling story!

Hey Elky77, if you want to post a pic, sign up with a site like photobucket. Upload a pic there then select the [IMG IMG] text string and add that to your post here on ECC. The pic will/should display.

Oh, BTW, "4th gen are goofy"??? I like all generation Elkies and proudly have my 4th :)

Bryan59EC

The poll SHOULD have been-----
What is your favorite generation of Elky

That being said

First gen is my favorite------59 specifically (thus the screen name)
Second gen is next----------66 specifically (have 2 of these as well)
Third gen----------------------68
Fourth gen---------------------Getting generic here--has to be fully loaded car
Fifth gen-----------too small and plain, but were coming around by 86. By that time the trim and the grill developed a bit of elegance, but the 4-spd was gone. The 5th gen elkies looked just like the Impalas and Montes.

No real UGLY Elkies-----some just have better lines than the others

I'm the proud owner of a badonkadonk, goofy elky! :P

The results of this poll are slightly depressing, but the posts are hillarious!! Haha.

Call me crazy, but upon looking for an elky to buy, I looked at all the gens...except first...i don't have that much money...haha and I ended up with 4th because, well, among many reasons I think it has a very cute little face!
