I was wondering if you knowledgeable fellas' could give me any tips on fine-tuning a carb. And also, could you guys tell me any problems you have heard, or have experienced with a 4bbl 305. ThanX

Ahhhh...the Rochester E4ME Quadrajet. I know it well.

The most common problems I've seen are vacuum leaks, fuel bowl leakdown, clogged gas filter, bad choke thermostat, improperly ajusted idle air, bad MCC, bad TPS, improperly ajusted idle mixing screws, stuck primary rods, and more that I've probably forgotten.

In order to fine tune it you need a set of CCC ajustment tools and a good scanner. If you don't have a scanner you'll need a dwell meter, voltmeter, and a tachometer.

All of the above mentioned problems can be resolved with a good rebuild. What are you having problems with?

Oh, I haven't had any problems with it yet. I don't get it till' next Saturday. I bought it last weekend, but since it was memorial day weekend, everything was closed, so we couldn't transfer titles. I will post my problems on here when they arise (I hope none do.) Talk to ya' later.
ThanX.

Check all your vacuum lines for breaks or cracks...replace as necessary. Then unbolt the pos. battery lead for five minutes to reset the computer.

It's only a pain in the ass until you understand how it works. The SES light coming on does not necessarily indicate a bad carburetor. Have you checked the codes that were set after the SES light came on?

There's plenty of written information available on the E4ME carburetor which, once read, will open your eyes to what a good carburetor it really is. Don't knock it if you don't understand it.

Your alternative is a Fuel Injection swap.

Kind of like using Microsoft products vs. Linux. Both do the Job one is a better foundation if you know it well but both do the job.

The Quadra Jet was to be the Carburetor that got both good "In Town Gas economy" and good to great, depending on the match up, off the line throttle response.

I've worked on them and rebuilt them I don't recall paying much attention to the specification and differences of each model. Not that I've worked on each model. Not really enough to speak intelligently about them as far as fine tuning goes.

Jet Technologies sells a super tuned Quadra Jet that is suppose to be "The One". I don't think they are the E electronic models.

All Carburetor have a weak spot somewhere as does EFI. Planning is the beginning of success where motors and response times are concerned. But that is just the way I look at it.
