Everything in front of the firewall of the 78 is directly interchangeable with a 79. The grills are a different style but they interchange also.

All front end clips on 5th Gens (1978-1988) will interchange; in fact everything will interchange with minor mods.

After a fender bender banged up my front end, I picked up a header panel for my 81 - it came from a 78 or 79. I have an 81 grill that I picked up on E-Bay that looks like it will fit (it measures out at the same size) but the headlight bezels on the header panel I just got appear to be different than what's currently on the 81 - does anybody know if I can use the ones from my 81 or will I need them from 78/79?

There were three different header panel configurations in 5th gen.

78-79 everything is the same. Grills have minor differences but are interchangeable.

80-81 everything is the same. Grills have minor differences but are interchangeable.

82-87 everything is the same.

Read this:

Thanks for the info. I kinda figured it out when I laid the '81 grill on the '78 header panel and NOTHING lined up correctly - your attachment confirmed it. I guess I need to find a 78/79 grill and headlight bezels...

Hey, I just thought of something - is the 78/79 header panel interchangeable with my 81 Elky? Or do I need an 80/81 header panel?

I assumed I could use the 78/79 on my truck, & just use a 78/79 grill & headlight bezels, but now I'm begining to wonder.

You can put a "complete" 78-79 header panel on your 81 and use the existing wiring harness. You can also put an 82-87 header panel on but you'd also need the 82-87 wiring harness or you'd have to modify your exisiting harness.

By "complete" I assume (and hope)you mean the 78/79 header panel with two matching 78/79 headlight bezels & a 78/79grill will fit directly on my '81 Elky. - can I use the 81 headlamps/parking lights(they all appear to be the same size and are the 'single' type used on all 78-81 models) or will they need to be replaced as well?

"Complete" includes marker (parking) lights and turn signals too.

Headlights and headlight buckets are the same but parking (marker) lights are different. 78-79 parking lights are different from 80-81 parking lights and will not interchange.

Thanks - that's what I thought. Although I picked up a 78 header panel pretty cheap - I'm beginning to realize that it will probably cost me more to replace everything else that I need. I already had a grill and spare headlight bezel for an 81 - if I can find a 78 in a junkyard I might get lucky and grab what I need...Thanks again for the information, I really appreciate it.

How'bout them BoSox?
