Ok, I'm checking the catalogs I have and I've been to the parts store. I'm working on an 81 and need to replace, I believe the cable that runs from the pedal through the equalizer back to the left rear brake. Any Ideas on where I can find this part?

Well I got a deal for you. A couple weeks ago I bought some elkies that are just parts cars. I will see if any of the e brake cables are good on them and if you wanna pay for shipping you can have it for free if any are good. But I won't know until Tuesday.

That sounds great. Thanks. Let me know how you make out. I would have kept the one off my 84, but I had to park it on the street with no tranny in it.

if you havent found cables yet try going to a locally owned auto parts store. Places like auto zone and advanced auto parts arnt worth a ****. I got the cables for my 79 at a local shop, look for the dirtiest auto parts store you know, odds are they will have them or they can get them for you. I'll check my recipts and see if i can find the brand of my cables. Just as a note DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT buy universal cables, they run up the center of the car, where as the elkys runalong the drivers side.

Also from the petal to the rear drum there are 2 cables, there are three cables on the car total. One runs from the petal, thru the firewall, thru a hole in the frame, and exits the frame at the front of the drivers door, there are two clips that hold the cable in place, a spring to keep tension on the cables and a retainer clip to keep the spring in place. You will need to reuse both clips, the spring and the retainer off of you old cable. This cable is only about 2.5-3 ft long, then a longer cable runs the length of the car, passes thru the equilizer, and attaches to the drum, the third cable runs from the equilizer to the passenger side drum. If all of this is still in place I reccommend taking pictures before you disconnect any of the cables. It seems simple but its very easy to get messed up. If your already disconnected or cant get pics and want them I can run my car up on the rack and take some photos.

I know that was long winded and you may already know the info but I hope I helped a little bit.

Thanks. That sounds like the info I needed. So is the cable from the pedal considered the "front" cable? The only thing I have left is the cable going from the right drum to the equalizer and the cable coming from the left drum, through the equalizer where it is frayed, broken, about 5 inches from the equalizer. This is the way I got the car, so I have no idea how to run the cable from the pedal. Thanks again.

Digity,

I found emer. brake cables for your Elky on www.NAPAonline.com.

I don't know if these are universal or for specific applications but you can see a pic of it on their website.

Just put emergency brake cable in their little search box and go from there.

Does it look something like this (http://www.inlinetube.com/Brake%20Cables/78-88%20GM%20A-Body/FT474.htm)?

Not sure if that's what it looks like as there is nothing there ;)
However, by the description this looks like what I need to purchase.
Thanks for all the help everyone.

I see the links. What I'm saying is, there is nothing left on the car for me to compare it to. So I have no idea if these parts are what I need.

Almost any auto parts store can get you a set of Wagner parking brake cables for your El Camino. There are three cables you need, the front, the RH rear, and the LH rear. They shouldn't cost more than $10-15 each.

Thanks. Now, how the heck do you get that cable out of the fire wall??

The same way you remove them from the backing plate. There is an e-brake cable removal tool made by Lisle for about $12. It's available at most auto parts stores. It makes the job alot easier.

I got the little nipple thingy out of the E brake. I'm just having trouble with where the cable goes into the bracket (the push in, locking thing).
