I have a stock 350 4bbl (Edelbrock carb w/ Weiand manifold) in my '76 El Camino. I have stock mainfolds w/ 2 1/4 pipe (out to the rear bumper), 4x9 Magnaflows & "H" pipe and she sounds like a tractor at idle and really raps when I get on it. I'm really disapointed with the sound since I wanted a beefy sound. The shop says the rapping is caused by the really long tail pipes. What are you guys running and how does it sound?

I should have put headers on it before I had the exhaust installed. However I had to do something with it since the exhaust was gone when I picked it up at a state auction. Time and money were not working well together when I had to make the call.

Hmmm...except that I have headers I have pretty much the same exhaust on my '79 and it sounds ok to me, a nice idle and moderated exhaust levels on acceleration. Maybe you should try some of those baffled exhaust tips to try and change the tone and eliminate the "rap".

Some kind of long headers, Flowmasters, 2 1/2". I just put new header gaskets on so I should get a new video, but you get the idea. When I put a brand new exhaust on my dad's '55 Thunderbird, it sounded like a boat. Probably the same as you're hearing. The T-bird's exhaust is pretty long after the mufflers so maybe that is the problem.
