An accelerator pump provides the fuel need until the main metering system can supply the necessary fuel. Different carbs have different systems. To get a good idea if your accelerator pump is working ok look down into the carb (engine NOT running). Open the throttle moderately quick and you should see two clean streams of gas squirt into the primaries immediately with no delay. Do it another 2 times and make sure that the gas streams during the entire throttle movement.

It could be your fuel pump also. check to see if it working properly.

look into checking the fuel filter. I've seen some so full of rust and stuff it wouldn't start.

when you floor it the extra fuel can strip up or move tiny particals just enough to posibly clog it temporairly

If the fuel filter is plugged enough not to allow enough fuel into the fuel bowl it would empty under hard acceleration and the engine would misfire or stall. If the fuel filter failed and let debris into the fuel bowl the idling circuit would be affected before the accelerator circuit.
