I'm no expert, but....

Factory shifts are made to be smooth and they waste power...shift kits elimnate the lag time and stiffen up the shifting...it does so by the use of different and extra check balls in the valve body as well as a few other parts...some block passages in the valve body and others help the fluid flow faster.

Bottom line is the shifts happen much faster than stock and hold each gear til the rpm range is perfect for the next gear to come in.

Shift kits boost fluid pressure to different areas of the trans. This makes it shift harder. If you have a high mileage transmission with a lot of wear it will burn it up quick. When you drop the pan look for piles of clutch material, a little is ok. A shift kit isn't a cure for a bad trans.

thanks guys, the tranny has about 1500 miles since a rebuild. will a shift kit hurt the tranny? from my understanding there is less clutch slipping so, in theory the trans will last longer. does this make sense?

Go right ahead, it's an easy done in an afternoon project. Have fun dropping the pan if you don't have a drain plug! MESSY!
