How do you re-seal a heater box. What do I need to do this?

I have seen some use rtv silicone sealant. The last time I was in mine I used a roll of dum dum. The same stuff that is used on mobile home doors and windows. It is a grey inert sealing compound. Worked well for me. That was about five years ago and no leaks.
