I have been looking for a new stereo to update the aftermarket Pioneer stereo cassette that is as old as the car. The car originally had a Delco AM radio. For some reason the people who installed the Pioneer for my grandparents left in the AM speakers. One of the speakers recently died so i've been listnin to one speaker for a while. The pioneer still works but it's time for something a little modern. I've been searching all over the internet but I can't seem to find a CD head unit that'll fit a '78-'82 Elky or any other g-body of those years. I know that you can put one in the car but none of the sites have one that fits. Do I have to make some mods to the dash? What CD units do you guys have? Also, I was told that the dash speaker I need are 3 1/2". Is that right? Thanks for the help.

You won't find a cd player that will fit the 5th gen. I went and wired up a normal one. I just got my interior finished so I'll be making a custom cover for the cd player, air controls, and cigarrette lighter.

If your car is a daily driver and not a 'show car'. Here's what I did. I found a face plate and metal mount behind it from a doner car and then cut out the metal plate with a small (dremal) cutter to fit my new stereo and then made a few cuts to the plastic plate to match. I also had to grind some plastic off of the inside of the cover to make it all fit. When done, it fits quite well and secure and you still get to use the original mounting screws. Not showroom, but looks good. Save the old ones for future use/sale. As for the speakers, yes they are 3 1/2" Bob

Wire it up to a newer stereo, then cut out with a dremel tool to fit the new stereo. thats what im assuming my owner before me did. But I put a better stereo in :-D
