Joe, great question. There are many software title that will let you manipulate pictures. The one I use is Easy Thumbnails (http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/index.php?2.8). It really only does one thing, make thumbnails of pictures. You can make avatar or profile size pictures really very easily. Just make sure you have a decent digital picture to start with.

Plus, the best part... it is freeware and is a very small download. Can't beat that.
