I own an 86 with a stock V6, TBI engine. The engine is tired and needs a bit of attention. Any sugestions as to engine selections? The current tranny is an automatic, no overdrive, is conversion to a manuel a tough job? Thanks for any info.

What are you wanting to do with your El once the new motor is in? How much are you able to spend? How long can you afford for it to be down? Where are you located and you do you have to worry about emissions?

These are just a few of the questions that need you need answer. There are some great combos that you can do.

I am located in Virginia, not to far from Washington D.C. so emissions are a problem. I am looking for a streetable EL with respectable power. I would consider a blower or a turbo down the road. The El Camino is not a primary vehicle so it could be down for a while. I would like to have my "ducks in a row" before starting this project. Thats the reason for the post. Thanks for the reply!

Depending on your checking account, you can just about anything. LS1 and LT1 are great upgrades. Even go with a 350 and do a TPI. Since you currently have TBI your a step ahead of most, you do not have to upgrade your fuel system. That will save you time and money.

The LS1 and LT1 can be done and be smog legal. You'll need to check with Virgina as to the complete requirements, but normally for most states you will need to have all of the smog equiment for the motor that you are installing and pass smog for that year of the motor, this is assuming that you are putting a later model motor in.
