Hey, thanks everyone who replied to my previous thread. It turns out it wasn't a carb problem stopping it from cranking but the distributor. I've had two fires start from a non ecm controlled carb I bought. The engine will not crank at all. I've set set the distributor to TDC from the 1 plug so many times my head is spinning, I've turned the distributor 180 degrees but it doesnt seem to matter, I still get backfiring. Would a bad module or another faulty part in the dist. cause this? If not, do anyone out there know what the problem could be?

By "cranking" do you mean it won't turn over or start?

Sorry for not making that clear, it turns over freely but wont start. I can hear rumbles in the gas tank and the carb pops and occasionally shoots fire.

I had a similar prob. Wasn't the moduel. it was the part that you plug the module into. I went and bought a new one. See it a friend will loan you one that works. even if you have to take it off his car you'll know if it's the dist or something else in less than an hour.

It's no mystery why the engine won't start. You need compression, the correct amount of fuel and a spark at the right time. It looks as though you have compression and I think you have fuel (two fires?); and you have spark, but not at the right time. Have you removed the distributor without noting the correct position?

That's exactly what I did. The advance spring seemed screwed up (no spring action) so I put in another distributor that I had hanging around, I'm not sure if that works either I guess. Very stupid, I know. I have reset it or atleast I think I have (it won't start so obviously I haven't done it right). I stuck some paper in the one plug and slowly turned the engines until it popped out. I did that mulitple times even turning the rotor 180.

Was the engine ever running correctly at some time? If it was what happened or what did you do so that it stopped running?

It was running, then a few months back it begun to die when you put it in gear but was idling just fine, so I thought it was the carb adn...well it' a long story which can be summed up with it was the distributor, The cap was missing the middle wire that the capacitor connector plugs in to. The mechanical advance didn't have any spring action so I replaced the destributor.
I turned the engine over with the distributor out because I thought I was heariing a squeaking sound when it turned over. I just remembered that part of this big miss. I still heard the squeaking with the dist. out.

In highly technical terms: Your timing is all screwed up!
Pull #1 plug and crank the engine back around to TDC. Remove the distributor cap and see if it is pointing at #1 terminal. I think you'll find it's way off.

I still say you need to test a known working one. Junk yard, Buddy, AutoZone where you can return it if it doesn't work. Get something.
If all you changed is the distributor how can that not be the problem?
