I have a lot of slack in the steering box. I have adjusted it all i can. Thinking it is wore out. What year and model box will fit my 83"

78-87 Monte Carlo, regal, cutlass, Malibu, etc. Most S-10's, 83-92 Camaro/firebird all will work. You could also buy a new one for about $300 that is a quick ratio. It's ashame I threw my stock one away a few weeks ago! I purchased a new one from Summit Racing. -Matt

Are you sure the problem isn't in the rag joint?

Around here somewhere are some articles on how to rebuild the Steering Sector and use the guts out of a Quick ratio F-Body Sector for quicker responce.

i have the same sloppy steering in my '81 but its leaking too. i've got the crappy box, the one with the round cover on top. will i be able to reuse my pitman arm? or will i have to change that also if i go with say a monte box with a square top. were is a good place to buy a good quality rag joint?

You'll most likely need to use the pitman arm off of the Monte and for a rag joint ... try your local dealer, but be aware, they are around $70.

Dumb Question. Whats a "Rag Joint"?

It's the part that connects the steering column shaft to the steering box.

Thats what I thought you where talking about. Most Techs call it a steering coupler, so that was throwing me off alittle. There's a cheaper way to replace or repair it. Motormite/Dorman makes a replacement part or a rebuild kit to fix the worn out rubber part. Here is a link to a site showing what I'm talking about: http://www.midwayautosupply.com/searchby.asp?txtSearch=Motormite+Steering&imageField.x=0&imageField.y=0
