Personnal opion here: if ya'll are going to sell Elky parts on ebay and you are a memeber of this fine site, why not give us all a shot at it before posting it on ebay. The money will probably be the same, unless your trying to get rich (good luck). Posting it in ebay, then coming in here and telling us about it, really isn't fair, I think, unless your trying to drive the price up. Sorry if I offended anyone, but this is a free world and these are MY $0.02.

Me personally, if and when I get something that I want to get rid of, which I do and am makin deals as I type this, am going to give whoever I deal with,, a GOOD deal, not to rip them off and not try to get rich off of them, before I even think about posting it anywheres, especially ebay.

I'm thinkin "old-school". remember when you were a kid and dad took you to the local junk-yard. Dad found the part we needed, and when he inquired the price from the owner, it was a few bucks. Now-a-days, you go to a "Used parts lot" ,(junk yard), they pull out a book bigger than any book I've ever seen, and get the retail price of the item, them ask for half,if not more, and won't budge on the price. That sux.

This post is not directed at any post in general in this forum, it was just a thought of mine when I read posts in this section, and went to ebay to see some ofthe prices things that I need are going for.

Plz don't hate :")

You make some valid points... but I feel compelled to offer some counter points.

There are some of us who do not really know what a part is worth. Putting it on Ebay takes care of this pretty well as the sale price of anything on Ebay is basically what **2** people are willing to pay. Due to Ebay's proxy bidding the sales price will always be a smidgeon higher than the second highest bidder's price.

There are a lot more people looking on Ebay on any given day than there are on elcaminocentral. Many of our parts are interesting to folks with other less interesting cars :D By putting parts on Ebay we get maximum exposure or advertising.

Putting a posting on elcaminocentral is a courtesy to our fellow Elky owners. Rather than expect you to peruse Ebay on a consistent basis to find interesting parts for interesting cars, sellers post a highlight here. Much less noise and BS for you to wade through since computer searches are sometimes less than refined.

When you find something on both that you like you can always make an offer to the seller. If they accept your offer they can cancel the Ebay auction. Many auctions mention that the auction may be terminated early as the item is for sale "locally".

None of us is going to get rich selling Elky parts. Especially when you factor in the parts we buy 8O Definitely a deficit spending proposition.

I see this as letting different sites do what they do best. Ebay is optimized to buying/selling stuff and has lots of features to make that work. Elcaminocentral is optimized to exchanging information about our favorite cars. Sometimes that information just happens to be about something for sale.

In the end I would rather buy/sell from within the family too. But sometimes with a small family you have to go outside the family :)

I have had my car on here in the Garage Sale forum since before Thanksgiving and have had exactly ONE inquiry about it... and yet over 122 views... My Car on ECC (http://www.elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7320)

now its possible my car is overpriced to you all, and thats fine, but my point here is rather to offer some counterpoint to rombisoid's original complaint...

I think the reason its not selling is because its a complete car, instead of individual parts, and we all already own Elky's. And most are already trying to fix the one they got, and dont need another project, just 'pieces' to fix theirs up...

so thats where ebay comes in. It increases 'viewership' by 500% over posting the item here (especially an entire car), and views by potential buyers is everything....

and so, if you guys that want 'a shot at it first' believe in that, lets hear from you with reasonable offers or actual $$$

PS like rombisoid this is not meant to make anyone mad, just an opinion in response to an opinion... 8)

Hey Mort, I can understand where you are coming from, but using eBay in combination with PayPal, does give buyers and sellers a limited amount of protection, and automation. I use eBay A LOT. In fact, it was the proceeds from several sales auctions on eBay that gave me the funds to purchase my Elky, and a few key components.

I have to agree with the others on this post, that elcaminocentral is a great place to share information, and eBay is better suited for buying and selling.

All valid points and I see how you all feel on this subject. Like I originally stated, this was my opion only. But, I can see posting a whole car in both this forum and Ebay, but parts can go in here. As for making a deal with the seller and having that person remove the item from Ebay, doesn't that go against the seller? I mean, doesn't the seller have to pay a price to post it there? I'm asking because I really don't know this answer, I buy on Ebay, never checked into selling.

Ebay charges two different kinds of fees. The first is what they call insertion fees. This is basically what it costs you to place the ad on Ebay and runs only a couple of bucks. Pretty cheap actually.

The second fee is the percentage of the sales price they charge upon completion of a successful auction. No bids, do not meet reserve, or terminate item prior to close and no fee is due. There is apparently also a point in time where you can no longer cancel the auction, something like within 12 hours of the end or somesuch. I have not found out exactly what that rule is.

From what I understand, most of the big ticket items on Ebay like whole cars, are often sold outside of Ebay and after the auction closes. Since Ebay collects a percentage of closing price, the fees go up as the price gets bigger. Thus they can become quite an incentive to not close on Ebay. Plus this way you can actually see and touch the item before writing a large check so to speak. This makes it a pretty cheap and effective advertising medium.

Note also that by using Ebay and Paypal folks can buy items using credit cards... although it *does* cost the sellers a few percentage points :-(

Hey guys when you sell a car on ebay this is what the fees are:
Insertion Fees
There is a non-refundable Insertion Fee for listing your item on eBay. Insertion Fee for an eBay Motors vehicle listing is either $30.00 or $40.00 depending on what it is that you are selling:
$40.00 Insertion Fee for Passenger Vehicles (cars, trucks, etc.) and Other Vehicles (aircraft, buses, commercial trucks, RVs & campers, and trailers)
$30.00 Insertion Fee for Motorcycles and Powersports (ATVs, high-performance go-karts, personal watercraft, scooters & mopeds, and snowmobiles)

Transaction Services Fee
eBay does not charge a Final Value Fee at the close of Vehicle listings on eBay. Instead, eBay charges a Transaction Services Fee at the time of the first bid on your listing (or if you set a reserve price, at the time of the first bid over that reserve). Just like Insertion Fees, the Transaction Services Fee is either $30.00 or $40.00 depending on what it is that you are selling:
$40.00 Transaction Services Fee for Passenger Vehicles (cars, trucks, etc.) and Other Vehicles (aircraft, buses, commercial trucks, RVs & campers, and trailers).
$30.00 Transaction Services Fee for Motorcycles and Powersports (ATVs, high-performance go-karts, personal watercraft, scooters & mopeds, and snowmobiles)
They do not take a pecentage fee for cars or trucks. But if you sell parts They take the fees as explained by vrooom3440.

I my self have posted a forum here trying to sell my 68 Elky. I have not recieved any response to it either. I was hoping to find a true elky lover to take my car into their family. I will try the classified forum next. If no buyers I will dismantle the car and use the drivetrain in another vehicle then set the body on a stock frame with a near stock motor/trans/rearend setup. Then try to sell it that way.

If you want to see my beater go here:

If anyone is interested in my car or has questions Email me at: speedy_1000@bresnan.net
I use ebay on a regular basis and I do believe in offering my car or parts to you guys first before Ebaying them.

8O I just noticed this thread, so may be a little late posting, but like you said just an opinion etc. I only post eBay items that I see on eBay not what I am trying to sell. If I see something I think the members here may be interested in then it gets posted. Then when the auction ends I come back and delete the post so it saves a little server space. Just my half dollar... :D Regards, 81_4fun

I've been think about this a little more.

This site is perfect for those items that you wish to donate. You know, "free to a good home" kind of thing. When you're looking to clean out your garage, or recover a small amount of cash for something you purchased and decided not to use, this is a great place for that.
