I'm wanting to replace the old borg warner coil on my 74 Elky. I'm still running points. I've got an 8140C Accel coil but due to its size I'm not sure if it can go in the stock location on the factory 2bbl intake. Do I need to fab or buy a bracket to mount it else where in the engine compartment like the firewall?

Thanks for any words of wisdom.

Before I went to HEI on my 74 I had the big ol' accel coil and I ended up mounting it on the firewall. I wanted to keep it away from engine heat and interference with linkage and such. This really comes into play if you swap out your intake manifold for something like an Edelbrock Performer. I had mine kind of off to the passenger side on the firewall.

Wow---I'm surprised to find anyone still running points, is there a reason for it like a complete restoration or something for half the price of that coil you could find a good used hei distributor and be way aheadof the game.....Dan

I've still got points. I was just looking at replacing the stock one and figured I'd spend the little bit more and get the accel. Is it possible to keep the coil with an hei swap and use it instead of a coil on cap?

I've also just been doing some tune up stuff for now till i can save up and afford to pull the motor and rebuild it. I've already replaced the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs.

I know there is such a thing as an external coil HEI. I just haven't seen a whole lot of them in person. Get ahold of a jegs (www.jegs.com) or a summit (www.summitracing.com) catalog and start browsing.

I don't see a need for an external coil with an hei as the in cap type is good up to about 7000 rpms which should cover just about all street situations. And it being a one wire hook-up makes it a piece of cake to convert...............Dan
