Hi Everyone,
I am new here and hope someone can help me. I have a 1976 El Camino that I am restoring. Recently I was driving her to work on a cold day when the car filled with smoke from the heat/AC vents. I shut off the heat and the car cleared out. It was suggested that I replace the blower motor and I did that today. Well, here's the problem, I am still getting a lot of smoke from the vents. I installed the new motor per the instructions in my book and it went in without a hitch. Any ideas on what could be causing the problem? The replacement motor is new not rebuilt or used. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Welcome David! about that smoke, possable causes: debris in the blower box, you can check that by removing the blower again and looking in the hole, do this soon, I have seen cars catch fire because of this. #2 heater leak, check passenger floor for wet spots, replace heater core if that is the problem. #3 a.c. is running with heater on (such as in defrost mode) with low charge causing evaporator fog.#4 if you are driving in a blizzard with out a cowel grill installed you could be sucking snow into the heater box. Good, luck David Johnson.

Thanks David. Actually the A/C has been removed from the car. The compressor died about five years ago and I hated it anyway, so I just removed it with the help of a mechanic. I live it Georgia and no blizzard at the moment even though it feels like we should have one going right now. If one does happen, I will head straight to the tip of Florida like the last time we had one. Guess I should have changed my time zone when I signed up. Just too concerned about having heat tomorrow.

I made sure that there wasn't any debris and such when I installed the new motor. I noticed that hose next to the blower motor on the fire wall seems to be smoking as well. Any ideas what that might be? Thanks for all your help!

When you say smoke comes out of the heater, does it leave moisture on the windshield? If so, you're problem is most likely the heater core. Replace it with a new one (about 20-25 bucks at Advance/AutoZone). It's not much more work than you did to replace the blower, just make sure you get all the little screws out, and don't forget to reattach the ground wire (on the heater core). Your heater will work alot better too, if it's the original your replacing. Hope this helps,David. Bob
