hi everyone,

i just bought a 64 elkie and need to get some sounds into it. i dont really want to cut into the dash, but i want to play CDs. i was thinking i could get the USA-1 head unit:

http://www.custom-autosound.com/prodFam.php?CatID=2

with this changer under/behind the seat, controller in the glovebox:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-CD-Changer--CDX-454RF-/sem/rpsm/oid/68274/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

it says the changer communicates with the head unit through the FM signal. is that going to be a good connection? anyone have experience with that? if this doesnt work maybe i will just get an alpine head unit and cut up the dash to install it.

re: speakers
i dont have any right now, but again i want an original look and dont want to cut into the door panels. where can i get kicker panels and maybe 6x9 boxes for behind the seat?

thanks everyone :-D

for kick panels you can go through thata same web-site custom-autosound or i've seen them at soundmove. but i think www.soundmove.com is just one of their dealers. in those kickpanels u can fit a 6.5inch speaker but not too deep. most people here have awesome systems and have pics posted in car domain. there u might get a good idea of what do to. have fun building your sys. check out my pics at car domain, might help u out.

A buddy of mine is running one of those disc changers. If you can hook the system up with wire (cord) instead of using the fm module, do it. You will get allot better cd-sound quality with wire instead of fm. Depends on how picky you are on your sound system, it DOES make a difference.

Most head units have a cd changer plug on them and they do sell adapters to interchange changers / head units, like using a sony changer on a Kenwood head unit.

does anyone have any experience with MTX boxes? will they provide a full range of sound?

That USA-1 radio is made for a 55-57 Ford Thunderbird just so you know. It might be funny having something that says Thunderbird with the emblem in your El Camino. Non the less, a very nice looking radio.

i dont' know about mtx, but i used to have a similar full-range box and it sounded awful. mostly because they are designed to be placed behind the seat and out of sight. thats fine for the base, but for the tweeters it's not. the highs sounded muffled and like the speaker was far away. i wouldn't recommend full-range boxes, even with an amp. unless you don't care for quality sound or it's just to get you by for a while.
