: Fiberglass bed cover
Homerj_1 06-16-2003, 07:07 PM :? I would like to know what you guys think about these? The Pro's and Con"s of them. Who likes them and who does not and why? I was thinking about either having a sprayed on bedliner put in it and then the fiberglass cover to seal the bed up tight from rain and stufff like that. I know that I will be limited on what I could haul but It is more for the weather and looks than anything And to lock something up in the bed of it but i know that it will not foolproof though. Just thought I would ask thanks guys. I check this site everyday just to see what's going on.
theelcaminofactory 06-16-2003, 07:28 PM There has been a lot of discussion here about this very subject in a previous forum, the pros and cons. The way I see it, anything that you can do to help protect your vehicle form exposure to the elements should be used providing it appeals to you the owner. I personally like the way the flat fiberglass tonneau cover looks if it is painted to match the car. I will be having a sprayed in bedliner done soon myself, but I plan on spraying the bed with POR-15 before having the liner sprayed. It's probably overkill but I just feel better having that extra protection.
Kool177 06-16-2003, 11:31 PM I have a fiberglass gaylords bed lid on my car. Pictures. (http://www.geocities.com/kool177/index.html) I like mine, it is painted to match the body. A good thing about it is that you can store your spare in there, and it clears up more space behind the seats. The lid might be a thief deterrant, I say "Might be" because it won't stop a thief, if a thief wants to break into your bed he will... one good pry with the crow bar, and that thing pops open. But, other than that I love it!
Homerj_1 06-17-2003, 03:43 AM :tellme: Hey Ken. Does any water get into the bed when it rains or when you wash it? I have the vinly tonneau cover with snaps now And I want to seal the bed water tight. One to prevent rust and two for anyting I might store in there , Thanks
ElkyPete 06-17-2003, 06:05 AM I have one from EC Parts. It is Gaylord lid. I also have custom bed carpet. The lid is suppose to be simi water tight, so to speak. I think they say "Weather Resistant".
It adds more than just looks. It keeps the wind out of the bed, which creates drag and doesn't help gas miliage. I added the functional rear spoiler, not a big ugly wing, to give some downward force to the back end at speed.
So I see them as being a good looking addition, functional with performance benifits.
Mellman99 06-17-2003, 06:21 AM can the fiberglass cover be painted like the rest of the car? Like now i've 2 tone green on my car, well green/grey, but anyways, eventually i would want it painted with a similar scheme of the rest of my car when i repaint it, do i do the same prepping steps or is it different since its fiberglass? i've always loved the look of that cover/spoiler, and the monte front end conversion with the ground effects, not drastic/rice like effects just the SS/CHOO CHOO look :) anyways, TIA
Kool177 06-17-2003, 07:25 PM homerj_1: it does a pretty good job of keeping the water out. But like ElkyPete said, it really isn't "Water Resistant" it is "Weather resistant."
Mellman99: Yes you can paint it.... Check out my bed lid Pictures (http://www.geocities.com/kool177/index.html).
Homerj_1 06-17-2003, 07:53 PM :D O.K. guys I have decided to buy one. My Elky is garage kept and I hardly ever drive it in the rain or winter time. I have been restoring it now for about 11 years. I think i have just about the way I want it except for the top. I will try and post some pictures of it as soon as I get a chance :)
ElkyPete 06-18-2003, 05:55 AM I have been restoring it now for about 11 years.
I was thinking I held the record on restoration project time wise, just kidding. I've only been working on my 5th gen for a little more than two years now. Took everything apart, no stone left unturned. The top came from EC Parts. Lauren Engineering use to sell one that was their own not Gaylord. I wanted that one it was a little nicer however they quit selling it so I got the Gaylord Lid. I am not unhappy with its quality. The other was a bit more specific for the truck. Gaylord lids are more "Generic" looking. Gaylord makes two type of lids. One is smooth and the other is textured. I got the smooth lid.
I saw a power ram advertised somewhere not long ago that could be fashioned to open the lid from inside the cab. It was made to open things like trunk lids. I have considered that upgrade, while it is still where I can without disturbing what I have already done. My alarm system has a ton of extra programmable features that can be operated off the remote. Under that Lid I have a Custom Bed carpet from Honest Charley's Custom Classics. At the front of the bed against the cab I have a 1/4" Plexiglas sheet that has a Mylar backing so it looks like a Mirror. Looks like there is a hole "nother'" bed when the lid is on and up. :D
I have the driver window and driver door on the remote. I can roll the window down or open the door (door Poppers) with the remote. I didn't do the auto start. It is difficult to do that with a carb. I can also pop the hood remotely. I've added the Daytime Running Lights and light sensors so the driving lights come on at dusk. I found some Window/door lock switches that are illuminated. Lots of stuff out there to add on creature comforts.

Wow, you've got a 89 El Camino! Those are more rare than the 61 El Camino.
theelcaminofactory 06-25-2003, 06:24 AM :eh: my head hurts now
ElkyPete 06-25-2003, 08:46 AM Come on don't give her the blues. :o
Elkys were no longer made in 89. So it is a 5th generation Elky and they stopped making them in 1987.
Short history for our new member, the El Camino first showed up in 1959 and GM stopped making them in 1960 and didn't make another until 1964. There are five generation of the El Camino in total.
Welcome to El Camino Central Car Show Girl. :) Nice to have another female in the Owners association.
I am from Texas so I can't supply the show information your requesting but I am sure one of these guys/gals can. I'd also like to wish you good luck in your new quest.
John Harris 06-25-2003, 09:28 AM My 83 Elky does not have the latches on the tailgate to lock the Gaylord top down. Does anyone know if Gaylord has a website, 800 number or catalogue so I can contact them for help?? Would appreciate any help in getting in contact with them. Thanks.
