Yes and NO.

The 700R4 is a longer transmission than the THM 350 / 400s. It will "generally" require that you move the cross member back 5" to accommodate its mounting position. Also the Driveshaft "Generally" has to be cut down by 3" it is 3" longer than the THM 350 and something like 1 or 2" longer than the THM 400 if I remember correctly. I know its 3 inches longer than the THM 350 its the 400 dimensions that I am unsure of.

Other than those modifications it will work, I have one in my 76 and have one in my 80 SS Elkys. One of my 700R4s has a lockup converter in it and one is a non-lockup version 700R4. I had both built and didn't get them from a bone yard.

You can replace the shift indicator or not. I didn't in the 76. I just made sure that "D" and 4th gear matched up. Everything else falls into place. You'd never be able to drop it all the way down into first gear this way but I figured that I'd never need to do that I haven't had to on anything else including my THM 350 so why start now. As long as your aware its actually overdrive.

Its a good swap, that or the THM 200R4 (built) is another good swap.

And Good Luck.

My tranny guy says that the 700R4 is much more durable and can handle 400 to 430 ft lbs of engine torque.

The stock 700R4 was never meant for that level of torque. Both the 200R4 and 700R4 can be modified to accept high torque levels. I prefer the 200R4 because I think it has better gear splits.
