Hey guys and gals ...i am from texas, i have owned my el camino for almost 2 years. During that time i have completely stripped the body of the 6 coats of paint on it and i now have it primered, took out the original 267 engine it had in it (I know a big mistake cuz the #'s won't match, but it sounds SOOO GOOD) and put a 305 with a bit of cam in it with dual exhaust and flowmasters. I am looking to change the rear end to give it a little more bite out of the hole, but i am don't know how to find out what gears it has in it now or what gears i need to put in it. If anyone knows where i can find that information out at i would really apreciate it. This looks like a great site and am looking forward to enjoying what i can learn from it....thanks Chance...and thank God for BOWTIES!

Welcome to the site. If you look at the rear end on the front of the passenger axle should be a set of numbers. If you post those someone here will be able to tell you what gears you have. You don't say the year but with a 267 that limits it to 3 years. I have an 82 that had a 267 in it. The rear end has 2.56 gears in it. Good chance you have the same.

And who needs numbers to match? :P I just finished getting an LT1 from a 95 Impala installed in my Elky.

In 1980 it should read something like -- 6AYG218D

example:
6AY = 2.56 non-posi
6BY = 2.56 posi

Let us know the first three digits and we'll tell you the ratio.

Welcome Dantheman and Chance. Always room for more here at ECC.

We have several members from Texas including me. :D Some of us are from the D/Fw area Metroplex. My 80 SS had 3.08 gears, Peg Leg, when I got it and a 305. There are lots of 5th generation owners here.

My curiosity is up, why the 305 and not a 350, 383 or a 400?. Your truck have a 350 Thd? I got rid of my 305 in favor of a 383 and got rid of the 350 lockup for a 700R4.

Anyway,,, you guys ever need help there are lots of people here with lots of combined knowledge and I am pretty sure you'll be able to find answers if and when you need some.

Again Welcome aboard!

Welcome to ECC Chance!

The best you can possibly have is a 3.08 in your Elky. The standard axle in the 5th gen with a V8 was the 2.41 and the "Performance Ratio" (G92) was a 3.08. Look at the RPO tag in the glove box to see if a G92 code is listed.

All of your El Camino questions can be answered right here.

thanks all of you for your welcomes and your information....i guess the first question ta answer is ....no pictures yet not painted yet so there for not ready ta post a pic....second i chose the 305 (which was bored out 60 over) because i drive this car everyday...it is my everyday driver. I guess i will go into a little history about me getting the car...i wrecked my truck being foolish and had no insurance on it so i was with out nothing....i found this elky for 1500, all original....except for the paint...original color just been painted again....but after driving and experiencing the enjoyment of an EL CAMINO...(put in caps for a reason)....i don't think i will drive anything else....so i decided to make this MY CAR, this is not it's last restoration, the final one will be a 350 or 396 or something else but because of gas prices i decided on a 305 with an Edelbrock carb and intake....hope that answers that question....thanks again for the reply's and the welcomes
