I need help! I have found what seems to be a SS 396 El Camino that has just about everything except front disc Brakes. Is this possible? It has a 12 bolt rear end, correct steering wheel, interior panels in the right color with the 396 emblems, Dash emblems, 400 turbo trans, Motor gone. Paint scheme is Champayne with brown vinyl top. UGLY ! The body tag has :

Vin: 136809Z355469

St-69 13680 BF 11193
Trim 770 B80 B90 63 F Paint
06B 455662 100259

I have ran into this on my El Camino and it was not a true SS 396.

Help appreciated!

According to all the info that I have been able to gather the SS option in 1969 included power front disc brakes. The body tag only tells us it had a V8 engine. A previous owner who was a real serious drag racer may have substituded the dics brakes for drums (less drag). A 35 year old car can hold many surprises.

Thanks for the advice. I have the original numbers on the master cylinder for a SS 396 according to the SS restoration Guide. If these numbers match maybe you are right. The number it has in the book is GM number 5468168 for the master cylinder and it said that the master cylinder should be painted gloss black, the power booster Gold Cadmium and the dual top natural metal.

Does this sound right?
