: 85 V8 Starter Motor--Mounting Torque Specs Please!!

My trusty GM shop manual for the 1985 model year is totally silent on the torque specs for mounting the starter/solenoid combo (2 bolts to mount to the engine, 1 bolt to mount the brace to the engine, 1 nut to mount the brace to the starter; there are 3 diff torque settings for these 3 groups of attachments) for the 5.0 V8 (gas).

The manual does, oddly, provide the specs for the 5.7 V8 DIESEL (which I do not think was available in Elkys).

Does anyone have a link or source for these specs?? Or know what these specs are for the 5.0 V8 (gas)??

Much appreciated!!

Taj

(PS...A link (if there is one) on El Camino Central for torque settings for all or most years would be a real asset to all of us!!)

The Service manual for the 78, and I assume things haven't changed much since, has a torque spec of 29 Lb./ft. for all small V engines. V6,8 and BBC 403? It has a 403 listed but it says 29 Lb. / Ft. for that one also.

So 29 Lb./Ft.

Does that help? :P

Pete, yes that helps...thanks!!

My 85 manual has the following for 85 5.7 V8 diesels:
--starter to block: 47 N-m; 35 ft-lbs
--starter bracket to block: 34 N-m; 25 ft-lbs
--starter bracket to starter: 20 N-m; 15 ft-lbs.

I was at the Chevy dealer today and asked there. They said those torques should apply...but would back off 5 ft-lbs and test to see if solid. Could be the bosses are not as stout for the 5.0 V8 gas as for the 5.7 V8 diesel.

Your 29 ft-lbs is right in that ballpark.

Your reply is much appreciated!!

I use this as a reference for both the 80 and the 76. It has stuff covering both but not everything. It is complete for the 78 but touches on some things for the earlier models.

Glad I could be of use.

Starter bolt torque specs?!?! What are those??? :-P I've always just tightened them up. As long as you don't put a bar on your wrench for leverage, firmly tight will do.
