Well, i'm 15 and looking for my first car. My dad bought an old Corvair off a guy and we went back there today to finish paying him for it. He said he had something special and when we asked what he said he had a 77' Elky Classic. He had planned on restoring it when he bought it but decided not to. It's got a 350 in it. It's showing 35k and some odd miles on the odo. He's asking 19k for it but since my dad bought the Vair we might get him down to 13. He started it up and it started very easily but it was out of gas. He offered to put gas in it and let me drive it but I had to go. It has 1 little rusty place on it and the front bumber is peeling a bit. I know its strange for a guy my age to want a car like this but when he started that engine I was in love. Plus, everyone at my school drives Honda Civics and I want something different. I have a few questions about this car though.

1) How many horses is the 350 pushing?
2) What kind of mpg can I expect from this thing?
3) Is there any website that sells new restoration parts?

19K is way overpriced. You can get one much better for alot lower price.
In fact there are probably some in our classifieds. Or Ebay. Look around and you will get a much better deal than this.

I agree. For 10K or even less you should get a car needing nothing. Later model Elkies are just not that rare.

I have a '79 with a 350 in it and here is what i have in it as of now:
Edelbrock 600cfm carb
Performer EPS intake
RV Jet Hot headers
full exahust w/ flowmasters
I imagine that i am putting out over 300, not sure how much over, but somewhere over 300
Ther are Lots of places to get things for the elky even if its not specifically for the el camino. Meaning that a lot of the parts are interchangable with parts from a malibu and so on.

Better price. STILL....Rust will cost you LOTS of dollars. Check the cab and floors. Search this site for RUST for ideas on where to look and what to check.
I paid $1950 for my '78 and I'll need to spend another $750 in panels and sheet metal repairs.

I also understand how you can come to love a car very quickly! The Camino is strong with you. Welcome to our club!!

Nothing weird about young people wanting older domestic iron. Wish it would happen more often though.

I doubt you'll get 20 M.P.G. with a 77 350 elky..... even with a 2-barrel and a light right foot. I'm guessing somewhere between 12-16 m.p.g. (if that good) depending on how the engine's running. There are a few good aftermarket companies that sell resto parts for ElCaminos (National Parts Depot,Year One,Original Parts Group),a google search might bring up more. I seriously doubt a factory stock 350 in a '77 ElCamino would put out 300 horses, but that's just my opinion,I can't prove a thing!
