Actually, I am running an inline fuel pump for the same reasons (hard to find fuel injected el camino parts). You can use the sending unit out of a camaro, but, some say that the fuel guage will be slightly off because the tank is shaped differently. I am not sure about that, just reporting what I have read.

I used steel braided rubber hose on my conversion. The size that is originally in your car should work for you. Just replace all of the rubber hose with steel braided hose. It is important to make sure you replace all of them at once (feed line and return line). Otherwise you will replace the original rubber hose one by one as they blow.

If you end up using your original fuel sending unit, make sure you remove it, and drill out the hole for the return unit. This will save you alot of troubleshooting in the future.

Good Luck on your conversion...

I found a sending unit & pump from a Grand National for $50 for all. I got lucky. There was a lot more 4.3L Monte Carlos than there was El Caminos, don't they use the same tank? I used the factory lines except I replace the rubber portions with high pressure rubber lines.

Well, you are just about set. I am pretty sure the monte's had the same fuel tank as the elkys. I am sure that the tank from the monte will fit in the elky. Here is what you need to do... LT1 was right in saying that there were far more fuel injected montes than elkys. If you already have the intank fuel pump, you should get the fuel tank and sending unit from a fuel injected monte. Once you get that, you can simply put your fuel pump into that sending unit, and put the whole tank into your elky. This will ensure that you have the correct fuel readings, and the stronger, newer pump....

You can probably come off a little cheaper than braided line by using aluminum line in the 25 ft rolls. Plus it is easier to bend. Then all you would need are the fittings. I also used a sending unit out of a granny national. I added a camaro pump and it worked great.

do u guys know what all g-bodys had efi in them ? so i can try looking for a fuel sending unit ? gn's , montes , elco's , ?

man i have had this elcamino an this tpi eng for so long )not running) but i am a limted budget now , i used to live in ca now i live in Tn in a one horese town . not a lot of good jobs . anyways u get the idea
so i have to look for used parts . when i think i should buy a new sending unit cause those things go out all the time then u have to pull the tank . but i am now willing to buy a used one to try an meet the 20 year plan for this car !

I have an 88tpi in my 82 El Camino and used the original tank, sending unit and gage. I added an in line hi pressure pump which was the only expensive item (about $90). I used the steel vent line as the return line and added a separate outlet in the sending unit cap so that I could vent the tank to the cannister. Replaced the low pressure hose with fuel injection hose which will stand the pressure at a cost of about $20 for all the hose and double clamps. Works great.

hi guys, just happen to come across this discussion. a tank from a monte will not work,as the fill neck is in the rear where on a camino it is on the side. what i did was bought a tank and sending unit from chevy and used a camaro tpi pump.

When I ran my fuel lines, I used #8 fuel lines for both supply and return lines. I also used the double flare fittings, where I could, to attach the fuel lines. If I used a clamp I used fuel injection line clamps (available in any parts store), and double clamped the hose to the steel line. I believe the only clamps I used were for the return line going into the tank.

HI guy's
I used 3/8 for the feed and 5/16 for the return, as for the tank I am using the stock tank with an ext (noisy) pump. This works but when I hit 1/4 tank I can hear the pump starving for fuel when I take corners. I am going to replace the tank with one out of an 85-88 elky that had v6 tbi because it has the baffles in it that way I just need to upgrade the pump and i'm good to go.

Can tell you from experience, the ORIGINAL sending unit ('86 4.3) assembly is not a cheap deal, and last time I knew discontinued or close to and this was back in 97. Lost my fuel pump and went to replace and snapped the Hi side line off behind the fitting. 200 dollars and special order later I had one.

Not a fun deal. I am interested in getting rid of my 4.3 for a couple more cylinders and like the idea of the LT/LS engine, just trying to get a feel for the work involved. Thanks for all info guys.

Ok, I checked gm parts direct (www.gmpartsdirect.com) and rock auto and found the PN`S for the fuel injection senders. 87 4.3L El Caminos use #25092938, 87 efi monte`s use #25092742. According to Rock auto 85/86 El Caminos and montes use #25004938, according to gm parts direct 85/86 El Caminos use #25004940, and montes use #25004938  well now that I am confused. 85 to 87 El Caminos use the same tank so I don`t get why there are two different senders, I checked the pics and the only difference I see is that the 87 has a rectangular float and the 85/86 is round. I am also wondering why rock auto and GM list different #`s for the 85/86 El Camino sender the only thing I can think of is that rock auto is wrong and trying to sell you a sender for a monte since it will also fit but I heard it is shorter than the El Camino sender. I typed the GM #25004940 number into the rock auto site and it came up invalid. I looked at olds, and buick g-bodies and the senders are different PN`s. Can anyone verify that the 85/86 El Camino sender and monte sender are different?
