If you have a good motor, and a 2 5/8 or above exhaust system, 40's will sound nice, especially if you have dual exhaust.

I have Flowmaster 40 3" on my big block blown '55 Chevy. Everyone says that they can hear me coming from about 1/2 mile away.

8) I run 40's on my 78 with 2 1/4 with Stans headers and it sounds good
gives just the right sound.

i have 40's with 2.5" dual and 1 7/8" headers on my '79 el camino. I love the throaty sound of the 40's and the way they bark when you step on the gas. The only downside i find is at around 2000 rpm they really "droan" and if your coming back from a party or something in the middle of the night it gives you a bit of a headache...i put down some sound deadener in the smugglers box which helped out a bit. But if you dont care bout that and want something that sounds kickass then 40's are the way to go, and they made quite a difference in power.

So i put the 40 series delta flow on my 79' conquista and the sound is there but its pretty mellow. I really like it. Bad news is the rest of my exhaust piping is all banged up and dented everywhere and the cat looks really bad so im probably gonna replace it soon. Will this increase flow and sound? Ive already put a new tailpipe cuz the one that was on there was getting rusty.

I have these on my 1971 SS with a 383 Stroker with headers. If you want to hear the radio while you are running over 1500 RPM you are going to have to turn up the volume. My wife wears earplugs when she rides with me in it. For me it is the mellow sound of power under my butt. 8-)

We have them on three of our vehicles and the sound is a little loud but is a nice sound, BUT the 2000 rpm mark is a loud one pass that rpm and below is not as bad. Does make a differance if you have good sound deadening in the cab and it does help to have the exhaust exit out back behind the rear end. Ed ke6bnl

40's here also w/ 2.5" duals... ditto others, bad resonation up to a point, but as others have pointed out elsewhere, you can't hear the leaky frameless windows anymore :)

has single exhaust and a cherry bomb style glass pack on it. I was thinking of going with the 40 myself in the future.

They are loud. Here's the problem. The mufflers are mounted right under the smuggler's compartment. There is no sound deadning there like the carpet pad under your seat. The smugglers compartment acts as a closed chamber and at certain RPMs resonates giving off a loud bass note. At least it does on my 3rd generation. I'm going to put Dynomat back there an try to tone it down. It'd be nice to be able to talk with the passenger while driving!

I was also looking into redoing my exhaust and was curious about the 40 series. I wanted a low rumble, but not to the point that driving would get annoying. My options I was looking at were either glasspacks or a 40 series. If anyone has any opinions on these it is greaty welcomed.

Has anyone used Magnaflow mufflers? I was wondering how they compare with Flowmaster. Magnaflow has a couple of sound clips (http://www.magnaflow.com/04sound/04american.asp) for the Mothers 67' El Camino...sounds pretty good. 8-)

It's funny that this post still gets replies. I've had my 40 series in for a pretty long time now. It really isn't very loud but thats probably because I have a POS engine.

Ive been running the 40's for a while, love the sound and the cab noise (got a loud cd player) too, but jus found out that flowmaster has a new 1 chamber race muffler that is also for clearance probs. They should be way louder than the 40's. Their sales rep tried too warn me about local noise laws, but hey like my bike "loud pipes saves lives"

Just my two cents: I just had my 40 series flowmasters replaced with dynomax super turbo's. supposed to flow better than flowmaster(at least thats what it says on the box) I liked the super 40's for about 6 mos. but finally couldnt take anymore of "the drone".the dynomax is a bunch quieter and power did not seem to suffer at all. -69 elco,383 stroker,435 hp.good luck!

Just installed two Flowmaster 30 series mufflers and while they are a lot quieter than the 40 series on my '55 Chevy there is still a lot of that unique "flowmaster tone". A little interior resonance at about 1900rpms is the only negative but in general I like 'um.

40's flowmaster with a 3" exhaust and 1 3/4 hooker supercomp headers you couldnt miss me if you wanted to , sitting at the stop lights is hilarious , people act like they dont see you or some stare , but the best is when the homies are bumpin their music and I just whomp the engine a little and it drowns them out and they know they have no chance of lookin cool anymore! :-D

Too Loud? Too Bad.

I like 'em loud. I have 40's on my 383 '82 Elky with an H-pipe. It sure seems like it has a lot of gravel but it sounds good. Sounds as nasty as anything you can expect to find on the street. With the cubes pushing it it really sounds good at WOT especailly at 5500 rpm. I don't really care about the resonance cuz I have an electric fuel pump bolted to where the backseat would be. It has a fairly annoyong drone but it is often drowned by the pipes. I love pulling up next to imports and scaring them sesnless with the nasty rough idle and leaving them in a cloud of tire smoke. I love my Flowmasters. Just having a blast with a few cubes and nice pipes.

Someone asked if anyone had Magnaflow mufflers on their EC's. I have them behind headers, with all 2 1/4 pipe out the rear. Took off the flowmasters to get rid of the resonation.
The Magnaflows do a better job of handling it. They sound good and I didn't notice any significant change in power.

When we put my exhaust on we almost bought 40 series then dad heard some at the muffler shop and said nope to loud so I had to go with the 50 series :-(

My answer as stated above... NOT LOUD ENOUGH!

Of course, It was a sunday morning the day after I had the headers installed, no mufflers yet. 9 am, went to see a friend and woke up a very crabby neighbor. ran into him later and he asked what I was doing that early in the morning. I asked why he wasn't doing anything that late in morning, then walked away and left him with a stupid look on his face.

I checked out that link and love the sound clips. I would be interested in checking out something like that for Flowmaster. I want good sound, but I don't really want it too loud....until I gouge it, that is.

I've had dual 40 s. Special on my 82 Elky for a week now. The Special series is just as loud as the 40 originals. I can tell you that they're pretty loud, but not rediculously loud. The sound is addicting too. I find myself tapping the gas all the time just to hear that "vroom!".
