Used this product POR-20 high temp brilliant aluminum a week ago, and so far it is doing a great job! It looks fantastic too. I pulled the stock exhaust off, and gave them both three coats with my spray gun, it was very easy to apply. I also used it on a friends headers, and it is doing a great job on his too. If I could only figure out how to spray it on the inside life would be good... :D Here is their site, POR-20 (http://www.imperialrestoration.com/por_15_high_temperature_coatings.asp) Rick,

Richard,

In retrospect, do you think there were any areas you didn't prep well enough or is it just junk?

Take care.

I wonder how it would work if you sand blasted the headers first. Or then again, you might have done it that way. Let us know what prep steps you tried. :?:

Those are good questions, and comments. I did nothing to prep the headers, and in fact I sprayed over the black high heat spray that Flow-Tech used. In other words this was not a very good test on my part! Please disreguard my other comments. Rick,

Preparation is everything! From their web site http://www.imperialrestoration.com/por_15_faq_high_temperature_paints_coating.asp

I have to agree that this stuff is not worth the money. I had a brand new Edelbrock tubular exhaust system for my 1987, and had it sandblasted at a local shop to remove all of the black paint that came on it. Then I sprayed on a couple of heavy coats of POR 20 aluminum, it dried nice & hard after a couple of hours. I used the recommended POR 15 solvent for thinner. I installed the exhaust system after allowing around a week to dry completely, and figured that the heat from running the engine would give it it's recommended 300 degree cure. It seemed good for a month or 2, but after it sat over the winter I noticed in the spring that the coating was all cracking. I could actually scrape off large chunks of the stuff with a screwdriver, and underneath it started to rust! So now the exhaust system is all rusty with flakes of POR 20 falling off here and there, even though I sand blasted them properly and used vinyl gloves when painting them.
Not sure what went wrong, but would have been better off sending them out for jet Hot coating I think.
