i have an '86 Elky, and i absolutely hate the idiot lights that are in the dash instead of real functional guages
i've been looking through some catalogs like OPGI, Summit, and others, anyone have any reccomendations for anything? which catalog to go with, which manufacturer to go with, whatever your input, i'd like to hear it
i don't really want to add anything extra to the dash (maybe a tach, but i can live without), i just want to know what is going on with my engine

Where do you want to install them? If you want to install them in the same location as the idiot lights you'll have to do some rewiring and have a dash pod with circuit board from a donar car.

Upgrade to the GM gauges. You'll need to find another gauge housing in order to use the GM gauges. Plus you'll need to add the oil pressure sensor and temperature sensor. I'm not so sure the V8 GM tach will work with your 4.3L.

Here are the part numbers to look for:

Gauge housing - 25044869
Gauge circuit board - 25016702

The circuit board number is on the back center of the circuit board. The housing number is on the front of the housing underneath the gauges/idiot lights.

Way to go Ernie...part numbers. I think that in a previous forum someone stated that the tach would have to come from a V6 donar car, the V8 tach wouldn't work correctly. Now airman hit the boneyards...thats an order!

i did a search using Mr. Goodwrench online (this site (http://www.gm-restorationparts.com/ewopg/OPGSITES/entry.asp) actually) and it said that the parts weren't found...

i would like to install them in the stock location, i was considering some white-face guages just for the increased visibility at night

those GM parts, are they electrical, or mechanical?

off to the boneyards, as soon as i can find a decent one in this area...

They aren't available through GM. They're discontinued. Your best bet is to buy the complete 86-88 gauge pod from someone stripping a Monte or El Camino. Another option is ebay, or you can try buying a complete used one from http://www.mikesmontes.com/
