There are a lot of factors in warming over the engine, Cam being one of them.

You didn't mention what intake setup you're running or if you've already upgraded your ignition system (hiperformance coil, wires, etc.)

For comparison purposes I just finished breathing on my SBC 350 in my '75. I wanted some more grunt but not something I couldn't use on the street.

The cam package I chose was matched to my carb/intake setup which is key. In my case I went with Edelbroch Performer series cam which was less thru Summit Racing (http://www.summitracing.com) and had only $8 handling fee for shipping.

Remeber: an engine is really an air pump, all the intake subsystems (carb, intake, cam, valve train) work together as a system.

The 292 is a fairly big cam and you have to match it with intake and exhaust upgrades.

The 292 is a fairly big cam and you have to match it with intake and exhaust upgrades.

Also, if your using stock heads its overboard. You'd need new vlave springs to go along with that kit, if your heads are stock. If they are not then you'd still need to be sure your springs will handel the lift. I'd say that anything over .5" lift you need to match up intake, carb, heads springs and valves to get the best overall performance.

Just a thought.

I agree that the 292 cam is borderline. I had one in my 69 BB Chevelle and the 109* lobe centers make for a choppy idle and low vacuum. My power brakes suffered.

A comparable Comp cam kit - CCA-K12-213-3 - will run about $359.00. It has 110* lobe centers though.

These bigger cams sound good but unless the rest of the engine and drivetrain are matched to the cam... they can cause more harm than good.

Making a statement in their add that it is a 375 hp cam is ridiculous.

In my opinion, always call the cam companies and let them tell you what will work best with your setup.

Comp Cams is really good about cam selection.

Thanks for all your replies. I am running a 350, with performer intake, Edlebrock 600 cfm. Accel HEI, with MSD spiral wires, and stock exhaust. I agree with ElkyPete, and Mrapii the exhaust is not right, and I'm pretty sure the springs are stock. This is what is so fantastic about this site, info. you can take to the bank, or in this case the parts store...LOL  Thanks again brothers. Rick,

A lot of people make the mistake of buying a cam and building an engine around it when the opposite should be done, because until you know the compression ratio, intake port volume, valve size, and exhaust system that will be used there is simply no way to pick the right cam. The last thing that goes in my engines is the cam. Until I know if the block needs decked and the heads milled etc etc... there is just not enough info until then to make the right choice.................Then I call the cam maker and get their recommendation.....................Dan
