i have a 79 and the front speaker looks like it is just one in the center, what size is this and are there any good speakers to replace it, also how big of a hassle is it to install, do i have to pull off the dash or anything?

I think it's 6x9 and u can undo the two screw on each side of the heater vent and that should get u to that speaker but if i was u invest in kick pannels they work the best from what i've herd.

its a 4x10. you can get better sound out of a set of 6 1\2's in the kick panels than one 4x10. that is what i did. the sound get along with my 6x9 in boxes in the smugglers box. soon i'll have a 12 in there. more sound!!!!i tried the easy way. i had a 4x10 laying around so i put it inand it just wasn't up to par.

i have custom upholstered doors, would i have to modify them in order to put the 6 x 9s in there?

There is a company that makes a very (MY OPINION) expensive kick panel that will take, I think, its a 5" speaker and a small 2" tweeter for the Monty Carlo. They're called Q-Form Kick Panels.

I have never had any but I know of some that got them. They said that they fit the Elky but there was something about them that had something to do with the part of the kick panel that wraps around inside the door opening. I think I remember them saying they had to use that piece off the old once to make them look right, not fit right.

I also believe they said that you had to modify the park brake a little to accommodate the speaker protrusions.

If your into custom enclosures and interior then possible you could look into those Q-Forms Kick Panels. They looked really good in the pics I saw, that was after the work. I think they are like 120.00 a set. and they come with speakers not empty, that is the other thing about them. You can put your own set in I suppose later, if they sounded lousy.

Its something to think about.

 eyes aren't as good as they use to be. I don't have my glasses with me.

Here is the web site

Sorry for the double post. I've been looking around on the web site for Q-Forms, just for kicks. By the way those enclosures above are actually for a 5th gen El Camino.

They make a set of custom enclosures for a Camaro

that looks like something that would work in the smugglers box of an Elky possibly. Of course they could be directional or just too large for the enclosure.

The humped piece could be turned over to accommodate the transmission hump in the box. Again it would depend on the height and width they don't supply. So, you'd have to go find a Camaro to make measurements or call those folks at Q-Logic I guess. If you wanted to go through all that.

Its a thought.
