I have been researching this very subject for a few days, including the possibility of installing an overhead console that could integrate a 3rd brakelight and dome light. So far, it is looking like my best bet is to fabricate units out of fiberglass. Wabbits may also be an option:

Like you, I would be very interested in successful options other than factory units.

I bought the seats and console from a 2002 Monte Carlo that had only 12K on the clock. Just yesterday I made the appointment to have everything installed, everything measures out fine and the console should fit with very minor shaping. Installation is on 4/26 so stay tuned for pictures! Also a Megashifter will be installed.

By the way, once it's all done I'll be selling the bench seat which is in perfect condition having been recovered within the past year, pics soon. If anyone is interested make me an offer, local pick up only (LI) or buyer makes arrangements to pack and truck.

Look forward to seeing those pics Leo.

In your research before selecting a MCarlo, did you discover any other interesting options. Possibly something leather, electric with heated seats? Heck, I'd use some of the new Cadillac CTS seats if they would just tilt forward.

I'm not interested in a lightweight Alumi-tub like Boyd Coddington. Give me the comfort and I'll just keep adding horsepower and use truck springs.

Yeah, I actually was looking for a set of Lincoln Mark VIII seats... electric, heated, lumbar, leather, and Autoglide (tilt the seat forward and the seat glides forward, tilt it back and thhe seat returns to where it was... way cool. Couldn't find any in decent mechanical shape.

I chanced on the Monte seats on ebay, junkyard had em and nobody was bidding. They are electric, lumbar, cloth and the grey plastic on them matches the Elky interior grey. I will recover them in leather this summer, I got real lucky, I only paid $125 for them with the console!!! Shipping cost more than the seats!

Keep us posted.

Those Lincoln seats do sound cool, but I'd be violating a promise to myself against Ford. I recently bought a $36,000 Mountaineer, the engine blew at 26,000 miles and the dealer service sucked. Plus, it had a total of 8 recalls. Never again.

I too am working on fabbing my own console.
I bought some swivel seats on ebay for $100 plus shipping. I intended to make the console and custom dash out of fiberglass and finished wood for that cool grained efect, but upon seeing the wabbits site, I may look into incorporating some of their stuff to save time/effort.

Actually, the real problem I've had so far is finding the particular components to make a quality floor or overhead console. For instance, where do these customizers find map lights, gauge pods, CD storage components, floor lights, integral garage door openers, LED's, etc.? Custom shops and even GM contract this stuff out.

I guess I'm a self reliant type. If Wabbits can build it, so can I, but where be da parts?

When all is said and done, selecting other GM stuff may be the way to go.

I used a mid-nineties s-10 console that fits perfect. And it has two cup holders too!

I also used a S-10 Balazer console with the Monte Carlo buckets. everything fit very well bolt in actually. The console works well because you can find them without a floor shifter so you don't have to change the colum out. Also gives the cup holders you want. If you want to see what they look like check page 5 on the gallery under Texas Pride and the yellow El Camino next to mine we both used the S-10 console. Harald K.

Thanks Harald K.

Somehow, I have missed this application. That console looks sweet. In fact, dare I say it, I like it better than factory. I'll have to do some checking to find a pic of a floor shift. A B&M Hammer is installed now. I speculate the flat panel of your console toward the front is where a shifter might go. Any idea where a pic might be found of an S10 floor shift console?

You may have given me a light at the end of the console tunnel.

Since I'll be changing to S10 front spindles, I guess I might as well continue to scavenge S10 parts!

I found pic of an S10 floor shift console. I think I'll do a little shopping, try to find a black or dark brown one, and take a chance on it.

Also, the overhead consoles look good too. Anyone had any experience with this install? Is there another thread on this subject?

Hope this helps. And, I'm still looking for overhead console feedback.

I am about ready to make mine. I have been working on my 80 interior this last month and am at the spot where I am now fabricating the seat brackets and next is the console.

Honest Charley sells the correct console for the 5th gens.

Anyway when it happens I'll post some pictures.

Here's a picture from thhe ebay listing. Note that the console is nearly identical to the S10 consoles noted above. Of course I'll take pics once they are installed.

Wow, those Blazer/S-10 consoles look great. I like them better than the stock ones. Has anyone put in one of these with the shifter, too? I think I'd like to try that if I can find one at one of the local junk yards.

...Has anyone put in one of these with the shifter, too?...

I have the 2002 Monte Carlo console which, to me, looks identical to the S10 console except for a fitting at the front which is easy removed. Mine has the slot for the shift and I will be installing a Megashifter. All the measurements say it should work very well... keep the fingers crossed and pics will be up by the end of the month I figure.

I got buckets seats for my 78 from a monte carlo. The middle console is going to be custome from wood or fiberglass then upholstered only because i'm puttinga slap stick shifter in, so the console is going to fit nice around it.

Has anyone added the console from another vehicle to a 3rd gen? I'm assuming it wouldn't be much, if any different from the 5th gen. I really like that s-10 / blazer console.

I had to take a couple of weeks off the 80 and pull out my 76's engine, change the cam. This weekend I'll get on the console. I'd give a sneak peak but all I have are dimensions and a hand drawing of what I want it to look like. I also upgraded to an electric fan on the 76 and installed a B&M Trans cooler. It was sort of planned the cam wasn't but everything else was.

We do what we must! :D Probably next weekend I'll have a picture of the rough console and possibly the speaker box for the rear. Its going to be entirely made from Wood but its not going to look like it and will eventually be the same color as the body is going to be. I got some 1/4" veneer and some MDF for the speaker box(s).

Looks like I'm going to be getting a console out of an S-10 pretty soon. Its got the floor shifter so I'll be switching over to that. Does anyone know if I'll be able to use the mount that's on my tranny now, or if I need the one off the S-10, or if I need something completely different? Can I use the cable from the S-10's shifter as well? Also, is there some kind of delete plate for the shift indicator on the dash?

Take a look at the Monte Carlo console here, I think it's the same as the S10 console http://elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=67397#67397
