: Timing after Valve Adjustment

Recently, I replaced the valve seals on my 85 305.

On reassembly at the point of adjusting the valves, I 'bump-started' her to get the timing mark as close to "0" as possible to line up #1 for TDC, then #6 for TDC.

The closest I could get was 2 degrees BTDC for both the #1 and #6 line-up.

I made no changes to the timing or idle speed.

Now that she is all put back together and running, she runs smooth but the idle is too low and she seems to lack power (yeah, I know...a 305...what should I expect?? LOL). And she seems to be running a little hotter than before (usually a clue the timing is off (too retarded)).

The specs call for timing to be 0 degrees with that 3-prong connector disconnected.

Since I adjusted the valves at a 2 degree BTDC advance, do I need to set my timing at 2 degrees BTDC?? (I usually add 1 degree for each 1000 ft above sea level.)

In short, what, if any, adjustments to timing should or must I make to compensate for the 2 degree diff on valve adjustment??

Any advice from an engine guru would be appreciated!!

Be well.

Easy fix...and an owner oversight.

Turns out I had not connected fully the wire for the fast-idle solenoid. I had 'semi attached' it but not enough for contact to be made.

Once fully connected, all's right in ElkyLand again!! LOL

I feel a little silly about this...but these things happen...even to folks far more gifted than I'll ever be!!

Glad it was simple.

Maybe my goof will be a lesson for someone else.

Be well.
