I'm running a '65 with a 327 and I'm really wanting to keep bettering my fiance's car. From what I've read here, the next best step is to do an ignition upgrade from points to an MSD system. The catch is, I've never done this sort of conversion before. What do I need?

I think I need this: Dist w/box (http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&part=MSD%2D85501&N=4294908216+4294840116+4294889107+4294925143+4001 22&rsview=sku&autoview=sku&Ns=P%5FSRE%5FDisplayPrice%7C1)

Or this: Dist. w/o box required (http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&part=MSD%2D8474&N=4294908216+4294840116+4294889107+4294925143+4001 22&rsview=sku&autoview=sku&Ns=P%5FSRE%5FDisplayPrice%7C1)

But I hear people are pretty high on the 6A ignitions. Should I go ahead and get one? If I got one later, could I use it with option 2?

Another option I've considered is just grabbing an HEI from a junkyard to upgrade my old points system. It'd be standard GM, but what can I then do with it? Can I add a box to that set up?

Personally I prefer the HEI because of the wide spacing of the sparkplug towers. Use the MSD6 box for the advantages of multi-spark. The distributor, whether OEM or aftermarket should be in good condition and the advance curve redone. Eliminate the ignition module and use the magnetic trigger; top it off with a good coil and secondary wiring and I think you will have an ignition system ready to tackle any street performance duties.

I am running a HEI in my Ford truck with a 327 1963 corvette motor runs so well and smooth gapped the plugs to .060" has 195 psi compression and doesn't ping I am pleased with it I have a 6a box laying in the garage but couldn't expect much better performance so it is just sitting there. Ed ke6bnl

A HEI is tuff to beat. I got a cheap one from from Summit ($150) came with an advance kit, perormance coil and chip. Worked great and blows away any points setup.

I remember adjusting the points and dwell. How I hated that. HEI is the way to go.
