The speedometer needle on my '84 El Cruck has been kind of jumpy and I haven't been in the mood to replace the cables or send the head out for repairs, so I took the easy way out: I checked the cable routing for unnatural bends. I found one where the cable is clamped to the power brake unit. I removed the clamp and did my best to restore the cable to a smooth bend.

Well, the needle shimmies but not as much and it appears to come closer to resting below "5" when stopped.

Maybe this summer I'll replace the cables but it's rarely driven, just turned 46k miles, and it's more a hobby/money pit than anything else. :)

At this point U might get away with just lubricating the cable to make it work for you Ed ke6bnl

A whole cable assembly is around 20 at Autozone.
